Can't get new 03 GT, how about used?

After visiting some dealerships (small and large) I was unable to negotiate a good deal for me. I know I had them pretty low, I hoped there would be a little more wiggle room.

Anyhow, I've heard buying a low miles used car can save serious cash. With Mustangs, I concerned that the previous owner could have been harsh on the hardware or I could be buying a problem car. If I have to go used, I hope to find a good 02 or 03 with less than 20K on the clock.

Can Anyone offer any tips or ideas for buying used? Any problems I should check for?

Thanks much, John (still hoping to be a Mustang owner!)

If you can afford to pay over $20,000 on a GT, why not spend the extra and get the 03 Cobra. Why even bother with a GT?

If you look around, you can get some very good deals. My wife was looking for a used black GT coupe. Our local Ford dealer has one for $18K. It's a 2002 GT with only 2600 miles on it. Practically new.

Unfortunately, now the wife can't decide if she wants the Stang or a new Jeep Wrangler (ugh..).

*sigh*

Just be careful, do your homework, and use Carfax to get reports on any car you are interested in. Just keep in mind that there is no guarantee that every thing has been reported to Carfax. Case in point. I bought a used truck 4 years ago before I knew about carfax. My wife got in an accident with it a year and a half ago. Recently, I pulled up carfax because a friend had an account for a month. I just wanted to see if her accident was on my truck's record. Much to my surprise, the truck had been in an accident BEFORE I bought it and my wife's accident was NOT on the report, even though it was reported to insurance and the police dept.

The used car market is definitely a buyers market right now. If you don't need low financing or dealer incentives, you can save a bundle on a used vehicle. New vehicles are nice, but you pay for them. Very late model used cars are hard to sell and usually can be had for a good price because a lot of people aren't interested in paying a lot to a private owner when they can get a new car from a dealer.

I have only purchased one new vehicle in my life and it was only because I had a desirable trade-in that was paid for, so I had considerable equity in the new car even after driving it off the lot. I would never buy new with no trade-in.

What?? Mustang drivers "harsh" on the hardware?? Never heard of such a thing.

I heard that the older version of the manual trans had some problems (T45 I think it was). I'm not sure when they switched over to the better one. I also heard some comments about a oil leak at a "difficult point" in the rear of the 4.6L engine.

These are otherwise more reliable "muscle cars" than were in the earlier styles (early 90s and before)

Actually... if you've decided to look at 'used' why not check out a used Cobra?

Boy do I second that. '96-98 305hp cars with under 30K miles on them are available for under $18k... like new Cobras... and you get the feeling of owning an SVT... even if it's not the newest and baddest, it still puts a smile on your face. :)

Hey there,

Try some of these. We bought a car via AutoByTel and couldn't have been any happier - great service, great price, no haggling

20K = mileage. Read it again.

I bought an '01 Ranger a couple of weeks ago that I located via the 'Net. I consistently got the best results with autorader as ZombyWoof suggests along with cars.com. Both of these sites yielded more (and more accurate) results than autobytel, carsearch, and edmunds.
