Catalytic converters

Does bringing more air into my 4.6L really help when there are four catalytic converters restricting the air flow? Also, is it true that if I leave the cats on and remove the mufflers it will still be quieter than if I were to put 40 series Flowmasters on? I have only put a K&N filter on and removed the air silencer because I don't feel it would be worth the investment for other mods until I am able to remove the cats(still under warranty). what suggestions does anyone have to increase my '99 GTs HP?

Thanks in advance

You can reinstall that air intake snorkel to pick up the 3 hp. you lost when you removed it. The K&N is worthwhile IF you keep the MAF squeaky-clean; the least bit of oil spray on the element will cause fuel starvation and pinging.

The 4 (6 in my cast) cats in the exhaust tubing are a big bottleneck. Installing louder mufflers won't increase exhaust flow because of this; it will only make what does come through, louder.

My suggestion to you is to swap in two high-flow cats to replace the OEM four you have now, and leave the OEM mufflers on. The resulting tone is very agressive without being overly loud, and exhaust flow will increase significantly. More information on this is located on my website.

While we're on cats, what will make them smell 'hot'? My '88 isn't running well right now and has an occasional bog. Could I have an exhaust problem? The check engine light is off but I'm going to have diagnostics run in a few days anyway.

Thanks, Gary '88 GT

I also have a question. I removed the smog pump from my 95 GT almost a year ago but I am considering replacing the off road H-pipe mated to the long tubes to a catted-H pipe. Can I do w/o the smog pump? I absolutely hate the way those things sound coming from the front of my car.
