Clutch installation

I'm going to call around tomorrow to see how much putting in a new clutch will cost me... but I thought I'd post here first to see what some others have paid & what the average cost for INSTALLING is (not for parts + install, but just install). Thanks guys/gals.

Wow.. cheap! Question, for a T-45 tranny, do they need to drop the transmission to replace the clutch? Thanks, bud.

Yes, they do have to remove the transmission to remove the bell housing and change the clutch.

BTW, lots of shops will not offer you the same warranty on parts and labor when they do not supply the parts! You may want to compare the prices and warranties with that in mind...

Well, around here... nobody backs up their warranty.. and when they do, it's for about 30 days.

Well, I got quoted $550 with tax. This includes "all new" throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, pressure plate.. resurface flywheel, what not. Not really much competition around here to get prices down, but this place is a real high-quality independent shop. Heard nothing but great stuff about 'em... they are *always* cram packed though. My uncle is pretty good friends w/ the owner so he's squeezing me in this week.

you might also get them to check the pilot bearing(the one that goes into the crankshaft that alignes the front shaft of the transmission to the engine as this is what starts to wear in time and the clutch might be out of alignment a little and throw the clutch out.. i had one that messes up one transmission and clutch after another( the clutch would buckle and tear up the front shaft..., but that was in 66.. who knows now????)

That's sounds like a good price to me. In Los Angeles I was recently quoted $644.00 parts and labor for a 96GT from a good shop.

It included:

clutch disk pressure plate T.O bearing pilot bearing rear main seal resurface flywheel labor

I was just going to say to also have the throwout bearing and pilot bearing replaced, even if it's not needed. While it's open might as well.

Why not take a weekend and learn to do it yourself? You'll save a butt-load of money you could spend on a better clutch, some beer, and some munchies. :)

I live in an apartment complex & they don't allow car repairs to be done here... but I change my oil & brake pads here anyway :P. I don't know anybody personally who knows enough about T-45 tranny's to be able to teach me how to do it myself (or obviously with a partner or 2 or 5). Plus, I'm not a beer fan ;).

I paid about $275 for all the labor plus a rebuilt clutch and new throw out bearing a couple years ago.

Welp.. clutch is installed.. but they say I need a new clutch cable. So I figure if I'm gonna get the cable replaced, I might as well do the entire clutch quadrant while I'm at it. I'm thinking definitely aluminum over plastic :P.

BUT... the clutch is f*cking stiff (they say they had to shim the cable w/ washers so it'd be stiffer until I got it replaced). BUT I *love* it. Doesn't wear out my leg, but it's noticeably stiffer. It GRABS too... I am thoroughly impressed. It gets a real mean bark outta 2nd now & if I *try* I can get a decent bark outta 3rd gear.. hard to though. It's new, so I'm not wanting to tear it up too quickly.. but I did tear into it a bit ;). Damn that was fun. Put the smile back on my face!! Total with tax it was $600.87 USD. Not bad in my book. AAMCO wanted $750.
