Dump my GT due to bad 'vert top?

I have 85K on my 2000 GT 'vert. Never had any major problems till this year:

- The top leaks a lot of water beind the rear seat and into the trunk

- Top of driver door window hits the canvas top when closing (so I need to leave it down half inch or so all the time).

I siliconed all the canvas joints I could find but still can't fix the leak. My local (North NJ) Ford dealer can't give me a firm estimate on repair beyound a $95 charge for initial "discovery". Two more dealers don't even do canvas repairs.

From the posts I've been reading, it seems that installing a new top is not that simple.

Can someone advise if there are shops in Tri-State area that can do this work please?

If I can't get anyone to fix this stupid problem, I'd be forced to shell out for the 2007 GT or the GT500. (Fairly simple solution, once I divorce my wife who still nags me to death about my current GT).

Thanks Ron

Yep, ours does, too. It doesn't get into the trunk, though -- it just pools in the canvas area behind the back seat.

Ours doesn't do that, but we DO leave the windows down an inch when putting the top up. (I believe the manual says to do so.)

I can't find our leak, either. The solution seems to be to drive the car only when the sun is out, and store the car in the winter. (I'm putting ours away in another week. The first two snow storms have missed us, but I ain't counting on THAT to last much longer.)

I suspect that the top edging is no longer properly clipped under the rear molding allowing water into the trunk. May be repairable. However, a new top can be had on eBay for the $150.00 range. Install will cost another $400 or so.

Well if it's the same as my '94 you will see an adjusting screw at the fold closest to the door window/rear window edge. Adjustment here will allow you to raise (in your case) or lower the top when it's closed. There is a nut that locks the screw so it's possible that it has loosened thereby allowing the top to settle lower to the point that the window glass is hitting the canvas.

Most don'y but they will be able to tell you where they send out their warranty work.

It's not if you want a smooth clean finish.

Next time it rains, put the wife in the trunk with a flashlight to look the leak. A nice run down the highway ought to make the location easy to see! :)

Had both problems with my 99.

For the window, remove the inner door panel (get a Haynes). The lower rear of the window is supported in a metal bracket and held by silicon adhesive, which has probably broken free. Re-glue it with silicon.

Can't help with the top. I haven't yet found my leak.

Check the wind flaps on the rear window curtain, (the two apparently useless pieces of material that sometimes hang out on either side of the window after the top has been raised.) If they are not visible try sticking your hand between the rear curtain and the roof then smooth them down. It's the same has when you make your bed, if the sheets aren't flat then the blanket won't lie smooth.
