FUEL ISSUES

My son has a 92 Mustang 5.0 with fuel problem I think. It idles beautifully but when you give it the gas she seems to be starving for fuel. She bogs big time. The pump has been changed as well as the filter. Timing is fine too. I would think the check engine light would come on however it doesn't. Any ideas?

Did you check the timing?

does it stall at stop signs when you give it the gas? If so, clean the air throttle bypass with carb cleaner, it gunks up over time and makes coming off idle bad. Change the fuel filter too. This should be easy to fix in any case.

It doesn't stall. It idles beautifully. Only when you romp on it she sounds like back firing and no fuel

Check the fuel pressure. Maybe the regulator is bad. Also, it could be a clogged fuel injector(s). It could really be a number of things. Especially with a 14 year old car. I would start by pulling the codes and seeing what results you get there.

air throttle bypass fouled will cause bogging.

How about the Mass Air Flow Sensor? Have you cleaned it yet?

Change the TPS {throttle pos sensor}.. that may also cause that problem

one replaces them, not "clean" them.

this is one of the last things to do.

Check the codes.

Hmmmm... I guess I have been hallucinating about cleaning my mass air sensors all these years? ;)

how do you clean them, without contaminating them ? I thought they just drifted out of spec over the years, then you change them out. Heat from exhaust cleans them (?)

You seem to be thinking of the O2 sensors. They can't be cleaned, only replaced. The MAF sensor is just behind the air filter housing and measures air coming into the engine. I clean my MAFs with brake cleaning fluid and Q-Tips.

Except that, while I dont know about the 92 series, in earliers a dead spot TPS doesnt throw a code. And they're a wear item and it's 14 years old and as it's 14 years old, there's a chance SOMEONE MIGHT have blown in choke cleaner around it... which will remove the carbon trace and they're cheap

And as it's already covered, I wont make a crack about confusing the LAST sensor in the airstream with the first one in the airstream

;)

Funny thing...there are no codes to check! I unplugged a sensor to see it the light works and indeed it does....I'll try some of the remedies you are suggesting Thanks

That doesnt mean there arent any codes... not every code turns on the light.

Now you have to remember which sensor you unplugged, so as not to confuse the issue

Problem was a dirty MAF...thanks all!
