GM: 39,000 job cuts, 9 plants closing

Time for better management, perhaps? Oh yes; Thanks to all Americans who sent their dollars overseas so they didn't have to feel bad telling their neighbours they bought an American car.

No free lunch, epilogue:

And a special thanks to UAW and CAW workers... for electing hot-shot local bosses who cared more about keeping their jobs by catering to the misfits on the lines than making sure GM got value for labor money spent.

Also to National Union bosses who thought the pot would never dry up... and, if it did, wouldnt be on THEIR watch, anyway.

And to middle management which found a way to make intentional re-works count as shift production.

And to forty's and fifty's upper management who thought it would be a good idea to get around wage freezes by adding on the extras and who waited WAY too long to get the pensions shifted out to 401k type instruments.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and Vice President Richard Shoemaker, who directs the UAW General Motors Department, issued this statement on today's announcement by General Motors:

"Today's action by General Motors is not only extremely disappointing, unfair and unfortunate, it is devastating to many thousands of workers, their families and their communities. While GM's continuing decline in market share is not the fault of workers or our communities, ...

"Workers and their unions have worked hard to improve product quality and productivity at GM facilities in the United States and Canada, and these efforts have produced strong gains in both these critical areas, as reported in recent studies by J.D. Power & Associates and the Harbour Report."

Perhaps, ..but maybe too little change, too late?

I need to correct things. 30,000 not 39,000 jobs. But still....

Exactly! But their MAIN gripe... other than the idiot Foremen, was the guys that made life tougher for the rest of them.. mouthing "job security",.. and yes, I worked for GM for a while, too; got 2 grievances filed on me in 18 months.. for essentially trying to do a good job, and trying to put out a quality product.
