I say the GR-1 looks most like a De Tomaso Mangusta, which is a good thing because the Mangusta ran a Ford motor:

I don't see Mangusta at all except that it has a long hood and no ass. The back end of the GR-1 is ALL Daytona Coupe. The front looks like a combo of several other cars, but not the Pantera or the Mangusta. The front on the GR-1 is rounded and smooth. The nose on the DeTomaso's are all sharp angles. It's closer to the Daytona. Plus with Shelby's name being involved I would have to say that the Daytona is WAY more likely to be the "inspiration" for this vehicle.

It is obvious the Daytona is the inspiration but I can see the Mangusta in it but only in the curve of the rear roofline and then only in profile. The Mangusta was a rear engined car and the rear deck butterflied open. Ironically it was going to be sold as a "Shelby" badged car ( called the Shelby Mk IV). I think the GR has a bit of Cheetah style in it too but again this is a car from the same vintage as the venerable Daytona and Ferrari GTO era also. Personally I think it kicks ass but too bad if it is produced some old gray haired rich bastard will just carbon it up unloading his golf clubs at the country club. Just sour grapes I guess. I have gray hair but I'm just not an old rich bastard! ;^) StuK

Yeah, I thought of the Cheetah too. But that is one ugly-assed car, and I wouldn't want to insult the GR-1 with the comparison.

A realhome-brewed look.

Speaking of GTO's, there I was at a site inspection at a customs warehouse in Oakland today. I hear the sharp bark of a small displacement V-12 and out from the back of a car carrier comes a gennie 250 GTO. Omigod!

Talk about a rich man's car. It turns out this warehouse was handling alot of the entrants from the Monterey Historics and Pebble Beach, that were returning to their overseas homes.

I just got home from 4 days in car guy heaven. (That would be Monterey for historics weekend) I stood at the exit of the Andretti hairpin during the GTO race. The sights and sounds of 17 GTOs, and 5 250 GT Short wheelbase Berlinettas was incredible. I can't wait for next year.

Unbelieveable. I've gone down for the Historics three times, and I've never seen a turnout of GTO's like that. Considering they only made

38 of them, that's amazing. Guesstimating the average value of those 23 cars at $20 million, that was nearly a half billion dollars of old heaps coming at you. 180 Out TS 28

They were honoring Ferrari this year. (Last year was Ford's turn, there were more GT40's than you can shake a stick at). It was an amazing turnout of historic prancing ponies. I would be willing to bet that there have never been 20 GTO's in the same racer, ever. The Group 4B race on Sunday included, large and small Block Cobras, a Daytona Coupe, GT350s, Corvettes, 2 Sunbeam Tigers (one a LeMans entrant in

64), a Ferrari 250LM and 275GTB. The 250LM driven by Rob Walton just ran away from the field. The closest thing was Derek Bell driving the Daytona Coupe.

In spite of all that, I like the sounds of the Cobras the best.

Last time I went the featured marque was Shelby American. One race was nothing but GT350-R's and their kin. Yeah, hearing that pack take the turn for the green flag was a true goose-bump experience.
