hard to control

I have a question for anoyone who may be able to help. I have a 88 LX and whenever i drive at highway speeds the car seems to sway back and forth, as in pulling to one side then to the other and vice versa. Also when i am driving slow it seems as though it doesnt want to straighten out after a turn, at least on its own I have to help a little in turning the wheel to get it back to normal. The highway driving is really the only problem cause it makes it feel unsafe. Two friends of mine, who have a 90 LX and the other 91 GT, have cars that do almost the exact same thing, so i am sure it is a common problem. I am almost sure it is a worn out suspension component or bushing, or combination of the two but i dont know what to start with. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

A sign the steering rack needs replacement.

You answered your own question. Replace everything at the same time. To save on the down time you should be able to find a pair of stock front A-arms and replace the old rubber bushings with all polyurethane ones from Energy Suspension. New front control arm bushings are really hard to get in. Here's a thread on the Corral where we talked about them front control arm parts replacement.

If this doesn't help you do a search in that same forum for FRONT CONTROL ARMS in the search box.

I might also consider replacing the tie rods. That is exactly what is wrong with mine, except for the turning issues while driving slow.

Check that all elements of the steering column are in good shape and tight. Get it fixed, whatever it is, ASAP!

get the front end checked.. probably needs an alignment???? i had my 83 mustang and changed out the rack on the car and put new one in and i had the toe set out by a few degrees, took it to an old time mechanic shop and told him what i changed out and he moved the tire rods in a little to bring the toe back in.. my car was wondering all over the place, it took him about 5 minutes and he told me to give him $10 and take my car off and it cured the problem.. if you go to almost any front end shop now they will do a complete check on it with their machines and charge you about $60....
