Hit Gas, Car No Go...

I've been having a problem with my car recently where if I step on the gas hard (actually it doesn't have to be that hard), the revs shoot up but no power is transmitted to the wheels. It feels as if I have the clutch in. I have to ease off on the gas to get the car moving. What might be causing this?

Another thing I've noticed lately is that my clutch doesn't disengage fully until the pedal is let all the way up. The self-adjustment doesn't do anything (actually I've never gotten the self-adjustment to do anything).

It's a 94 Mustang GT, by the way. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

Do you smell something burning when this happens?

Like everyone else said, your clutch needs to be replaced.

One way this was always evident in my 5.0's was that, while in 5th gear, I could be driving on the highway and anything half throttle or more would just wind the motor and the clutch wouldn't grab.

While you're at it, you will probably want to replace the collar that the throwout bearing rides on. If the 94 is like the earlier models, it would get a ring scored in it. If you don't replace it, you may get a notchy feel from the clutch.

Thanks for the insights, guys. I guess I need a new clutch. I'll see about replacing the collar, too.

Scott: I don't notice a burning smell when this happens (although my sense of smell isn't that great)...

A Guy Named Steve opined in news:XnBOc.3545$ snipped-for-privacy@newsread2.news.pas.earthlink.net:

That's a REALLY bad clutch. the sign of an early bad clutch is how it settles into 5th while under brisk acceleration. If it feels like you're driving an AT and OD is kicking in, the clutch is going.

If rpm's drop right in, you have a while.

The "collar" used to be called "input shaft housing" and I concur, replace it if it shows ANY scoring at all.
