How to get headrest off seat / `03 GT vert

Hello,

How do you remove the headrests from the front seats of an `03 convertible Mustang GT? On most cars, there is a button that you can release under the headrest that will allow the headrest to pull right out of the seat. On the Mustang, I do not see any buttons... I pulled up hard on the headrest but it will not come out. Any ideas on how to pull the headrests out? Thanks in advance.

There is no button. You have to get something skinny like a slim-jim and slide it down the shaft that holds the headrest on so that it pushes in the little retainer bump that holds it in. I suppose you could call it a button, but it's kind of spring loaded and is inside the seat where you cannot reach it.

Once you feel the slim-jim stop, then give it a good shove downward then yank the headrest.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for the info! Hey, before I even attack it, do you know off-hand if the retainer bump is on the side facing the windshield, or the side facing the rear of the car? Thanks!!!

Fred, if you view the TECHNICAL section of my wesite (see below) it will give you some insight as to the spring loaded clip preventing the headrest from coming out.

P.S. lift the plastic collar around the shaft upward and then slide the Slim Jim/hacksaw blade down the front of the shaft. It's too tight of a fit trying to get the tool between the plastic collar and the shaft.

Thanks for the info!

The only thing that looks tricky now is being able to slide the slim jim or hacksaw blade straight down the headrest shaft. The headrest itself is pretty fat and will not allow anything to be slid straight down the shaft. Whatever tool that is used to slide down the shaft will need to be bent pretty severely... I think my hacksaw blade might snap with this kind of angle. Since the headrest comes up off the seat only a few inches, there is very little room to work. Maybe I'll just go buy a real slim jim, those are pretty flexibly I believe. Thanks!

I actually use a hack saw blade which I ground the teeth off and it works VERY well. No problems bending it in a curve and having it stay there.
