Just installed a Chip in my 5.0... Got a few ??

... A buddy of mine has an old Hypertech Chip he's trying to sell me from his old 5.0/T5 Stang.

I installed into a little while ago and it did make some difference. The throttle response is "snappier" and there is abit more power.

One big thing I did notice is that my Engine Temperature is alot higher now WITH the Chip. Before the temp gauge was always ready kinda low (when the engine was warmed up). Now, with the Chip installed, the Temp is reading just UNDER 1/2 way.

What would cause the engine to run warmer with the Chip installed ??

What ECM parameters are "tweaked" with an aftermarket (MANUAL transmission) Chip ??

How much should I offer to pay my buddy for this Chip ??

What is your base timing set at? Does the car pinig alot? These chips usually run more timing and fuel. If your base timing is already advanced you might want to reset it again with the chip in...Too much advance can cause your heating difference. Check it out, it could possibly be desastrous.

As long as it doesn't ping I always thought more timing made teh car run cooler. I had an overheating problem in my '67 289 and I was about to shell out for a reproduction fan shroud, but tried advancing the timing first, and what do you know, it ran cooler and faster!

The distributor has an electronic advance curve (as opposed to vacuum or mechanical). My friend's Bronco has a V6 with that sort of distributor, though the advance curve is adjusted with 'octane rods' that you install in it. In any case, you set base timing and it keeps the same amount of advance and curve as normal, i.e. the more base advance the more total advance.

Good point. I do have it advanced.

I'll set it back some and see how it goes.

How is the timing adjusted by a Chip if a car has a distributor (that adjusts the timing) ????
