Lack of refining capacity, thanks envirokooks

Before you blast the "enviroscum" I suggest you go live in a country for a while that doesn't have any/much of any environmental laws. I have and I can tell you when I returned I kissed my catalytic convertors and vowed to never again have a vehicle that doesn't run legally.

So, yes, while the enviroscum can cause us hotrodders some head/heart aches they, for the most part, see a/the broader picture.

China has an agreement with Cuba to drill for oil in the Gulf.

China has also staked claimes to oil and mineral mining of the ocean floor all around the East China Sea, etc. They even acknowledge planting a Chinese flag on the ocean floor.

By imposing regulations through the EPA and other agancies

Speculators bet on the price of oil rising or falling. In order to decide which way to bet, they watch a wide range of actions which impact the price. For example, as soon as Obama slammed the door on deep water drilling and imposed finacial sanctions, the speculators knew the price would rise.

the "enviroscum" are the ones who for over 40 years have been trying to stop the building, or even expanding, of new refineries. They are also the ones who have pushed for fuels which damage engines (here in California even the state tried to eliminate the special fuel and the feds said they could not go back). Ethanol? It's driving up food prices AND screwing up engines. That's at the 10% level. And Obama wants to go to at least 15% in the near term and higher down the road. As for what Obama is doing... just go back and read his own words during the campaign.

Do I trust the oil companies? No. Do I trust this socialist style adminiostration? Absolutely not. Nor do I blame Obam,a for everyuthing. It's all been building up to this for decades, and both parties are to blame. I just see this one as the very worst... even worse than Jimmy Carter.

Do they really? I've seen what they have done to California. The state has been going down hill since Ronald Reagan left office. Buisness is killed by an avalanche of regulations. You can't even take your own son to a job site to teach him the family business without being levied with an obscene fine.

I believe D E Willson answered that, and thank you D E.

Are we picking nits here? Are you that ignorant of how things work? Okay, the president's staff, cronies, fellow party members, etc, adjust taxes, make laws, and all those other things. When I said "o'bama" I meant his entire horde of socialist party members. Sorry I wasn't as clear as I should have been for you.

Isn't that the way it's intended to work? It's called checks and balance but of late all I see is evidance of check$ and no balance in the system.

Refinery capacity was CUT due to ridiculous environmental concerns. C02 is NOT a pollutant it never has been. It's integral to plant life. Which the enviros should be aware of, since they are all vegetables.

Go back to your Prius, greenie.

So, naturally enough, when this administration started handing out even more leases the oil companies couldn't use, the price went down just as fast. Right?

I have to say, having been an adult in the 60s and 70s, that I applaud regulation (common sense regulation). There are far too many graphic examples of what an unfettered industry is capable of. China is only now waking up to this reality.

In particular (aside from the little things like our food supply, aviation, etc.), applaud regulation of our energy industry - oil, gas, coal. There is no question that an unregulated energy industry would rape the planet and leave the mess to be cleaned up by the taxpayers. Superfund sites - who created them, and who's paying to clean them up?

This is not a chicken-and-egg problem. The EPA was established out of a glaring need, and has done an overall great job ever since. Our rivers no longer burn. Our air and water are now passable.

Put me down as one that comes down on the side of a stronger EPA, not one that's been eviscerated by corporate profit-at-any-cost "needs."

That's not what I read. Something about maintenance... But nice try.

1) Because we feed corn to cows. Cows don't eat corn. It makes them sick. Cows eat, or should be eating, grass. 2) Most of the corn we do use in/for food is in the form of high- fructose corn syrup. If they'd stop using so much high-fructose corn syrup, and stop making all our "food" taste like candy, our need for corn would drop considerably.

What we need is an energy policy. And to start developing alternatives for oil.

Seems if Fox News says Obama is a socialist enough times people will believe it. Too bad they wouldn't have stuck with "he pals around with terrorists", because that would have been funny for them to explain after OBL's death.

I agree both parties are to blame. (But keep in mind the Republicans were driving the bus when it/the economy went over the cliff. And for them now to point fingers about how bad things are, kills me.)

You're talking apples and oranges. It is true that environmentalists have cause restrictions on refining. It is also true that refineries have been shut down for periods of time for maintenance.

Thereare differering views on "maintenance". Some believe that the oil companies do this to drive up the prices. Such may indeed be the case.

Another camp holds that because refineries have been restricted from modernization, the equipment doesn't hold up as well as it did when new. A simplified version of this is when you buy a new car and have no real problems with it during the first 5 years, but, from that point on, the incidence of parts going bad increases.

In my view, both are quite possible. I don't personally believe corporations are as evil as the far left makes them out to be. At the same time, I do not believe they are totally innocent, either. There is a lot of greed out there. The DOTCOM implosion was proof of that. So, too, are all those people who demand that the government provide them with free medical, food stamps, and all the rest of the benefits, without a requirement to earn them.
