Michelin metric wheels and tires

Hi all, I'm a new subscriber and I'm hoping someone can help. I have a 1984 Mercury Capri RS 5.0 (Mercury version of the Mustang GT) that has led a very sheltered life, but the tires are wearing thin. The tires and wheels aren't original to the car, but I think they were common on Mustangs in the early 80s. The wheels are 4 bolt with Michelin 200/55 R390 TRX tires. I checked Coker and similar tires are $350 each. I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to replace the wheels and tires with a more conventional size ... but then there's the 4 bolt rim problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, Dick R.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 15" 4-lug rims from the 85/86 Mustangs/Capris should be the same bolt circle and thus should be interchangeable with the TRX rims. And tires a whole lot easier to find,

225/60-15 is stock size. If these rims fit, and I believe they do, they can be had fairly cheap. Check your local parts yard or e-bay, or even the classifieds in your local paper. I've seen them as low as $150 for a set of
  1. I own an '86 Capri 5.0 5-spd. I get my tires from Tire Rack. Currently running Conti Extreme Contacts. It's become an odd size, with only these older Foxes and some older BMWs using them so the selection is not tremendous. But I like my Conti's, going back for another set soon.

For the price of two TRX tires from Coker, you can get a set of used rims and decent 15" tires. And possibly have change left over.

good luck fellow Capri brethren, mkl

Hi Mike, Thanks for the info. I have lots of time to look for replacement rims and tires because I only drive the car on very short trips in the summer, when it's not raining, and my right foot wants some action! I bought it new and it hasn't reached 70K miles yet. Thanks again, Dick R.
