neutral safety switch replacement

Has anyone replaced the neutral safety switch on their 94-95 Mustang. If so I would like to know where it is on the care. My belief is its on the shift linkage and my tranny guy told me it was underneath the car on the tranny itself.

If it's a manual car, it's on the transmission. If it's an auto, I don't know where it is, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd bet it's on the transmission too. Just a wild guess on the auto part, but I'm certain it's in the trans if it's a manual.

Is there even a neutral safety switch on a manual? I Know there is a sensor for the clutch being pushed, but do you really have to have the trans in neutral too (on a 94-95)?

FWIW, my 84 Celica can have the trans in any gear, clutch in any position, and will crank till the cows come home..

Good point, but there is a neutral switch for the EEC-IV to determine what's going on. I guess there's a different strategy for just coasting in idle. You don't have to have the trans in neutral to start, just the clutch in (unless you do JD Adams' mod).

I had an '83 Capri 5.0 4-speed and it did the same thing. I had my girl hit the key once cause she was anxious to leave, and when the car jumped, it scared the hell out of her. I also happened to be in front of the car and was expecting it, so I jumped up on the hood (not a pretty car anyway) and then cussed her out for being in such a damn hurry.

She wasn't real bright, nor real good, anyway... she deserved it.

What's the story on your Celica?

Haha, poor girl.

No story on the Celica, that's just how it came from the factory. Good car though...

Poor girl? She failed the test to work at Sheetz. When asked how many days are in a week, she answered "Seven, right?" Same girl was quoted as saying "I worked a half hour and 7 minutes overtime today."

Yeah, I know, I admit knowing someone that dumb, and even dating her for a while.

Kinda lookin for a daily driver / winter beater.. trying to get a feel for what's out there and what I might like. Right now, I'm leaning towards a Z24 Cavalier from somewhere around 88-94... cheap cars that just about go forever. The newer Celicas I've looked at seemed to be all overpriced...

Brunette. She was just plain dumb. :-)

Besides, I'm probably classified as dirty blonde anyway, especially in the summer when the sun bleaches my hair some.

PHEW! Glad to hear it LOL

Yea, I am a "dirty blonde" too... but it's not because of the hair color

*wink*

Get yourself an 84 Celica. Has the 22RE (read: UNKILLABLE), gets about 25mpg mixed driving, is RWD, and just WONT die.

That's interesting because I had an 85 Truck with a 22R and it started knocking at about 65-70 K miles. Knocking as in a rod baring

Thought about getting an older Celica or something in those lines. I can't find too much local to me that's in good condition. I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks for the info.

That truck must have been incredibly abused.

Mine Celica has 233,000 miles. At 225K, I ran it out of oil (oil pressure sensor blew, spit ALL my oil on the freeway). Drove 5 miles home with NO oil, yes NO oil. Sat at traffic lights, drove, ect. Put a new sensor on, filled her with oil, still runs strong.

AC blows cold, still gets up and goes, no knocking. Damn thing doesn't even leak a drop of oil OR use any oil. Oil pressure is still nice and high. I just replaced the ORIGINAL nippon alternator at 221k. All major enigne components are original. Runs smooth & quiet. Rides smooth, handles incredibly. Also, I can't forget that it looks brand new as well.

Not only is it ultra-reliable and economical, and a breeze to work on, its got some options Mustangs don't even have yet from the factory yet (independent RWD suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, ect). I do, however, prefer the Mustang!

Don't get me wrong, a Mustang is much better, but the Toyota makes a great driver while the Pony is in the stable.

At 7 years old it had 70K or less miles, I towed a Scout troop trailer 40 miles twice, and a 14' aluminum bateau twice. In that time I had to replace the counter gear in the transmission, it developed a broken tooth on the 2nd gear ring, had to replace the clutch master cylinder after leaking brake fluid all over the carpet, replaced the harmonic balancer after the bolt worked out, the PS pulley and some very expensive square head copper bolts in the starter. After it stared knocking, I replaced the timing chain tensioner and all of the thrust washers. Oh, I had to rebuild the alternator too. I changed my oil at that time every 3-4 thousand miles and used Mobil 1 along with Fram filters. Possibly the Fram filter caused my engine trouble, but it didn't have anything to do with the rest of it. There was no abuse involved. Maybe it was a Monday or Friday vehicle, I don't know I can just say that my Toyota experience was not good.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I've had nothing but good experiances with my Toyota.
