New Mustang: We Got EXACTLY What We Wanted!

According to Phil Martens, Ford's group Vice President of product creation, says the next Cobra will likely be supercharged with a substantial increase from the current 390 hp. :-p

Sweet!

I just received my February Car & Driver which includes a pic of a V6. Looks cleaner to me without the rear spoiler and "moon-size driving lamps". Will the GT grille mounted driving lamps also have a delete option?

If there's one thing that I would change about the car is I would make the side mirrors body colored. No biggie, though.

Looking closely at the pics in C&D and Motor Trend, it appears to me that the new Mustang exterior has a very tight fit. C&D states, "Phil Martens has put his fingerprints all over the new Mustang. At the helm of Mazda until March 2002, when he became Ford's group vice-president for product creations, Martens helped engineer the 2005 Mustang's move from Ford's assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan, to the Ford/Mazda plant in nearby Flat Rock. There, the Mustang takes advantage of Mazda technology for better body assembly and quality control."

Outstanding! Anyone ever notice how tight a Miata is put together?

My biggest Mustang gripes (i.e. styling [interior and exterior], ergonomics, fit-n-finish) seem to have all been addressed vs. the '99 models I test drove the last time I went new car shopping. Of course, I'll have to see one in person and I plan to do a comprehensive look-over along with a test drive before I buy one. I already know the performance will be there (getting a GT), but it's those other attributes that I'll be critiquing that probably mean allot more to me than most Mustang owners.

We might all have differing opinions on styling (i.e. fake scoops, large grooves along bottom of rear bumper, etc.) and ergonomics (i.e. seats, shifter location [and feel]), but the new Mustang looks to be about damn near perfect to me! I've never desired a car so much other than a new 'Vette (C5 and now C6) but that dream has been put on hold for now.

The cover of the current Car and Driver issue is titled "Reborn in the USA" and features a '05 Corvette and Mustang. The related articles suggests that "Detroit" is really getting their act together. Kudos to Detroit.

Makes good economical sense. Can't get too much more n/a hp out of that thing without the price going through the roof.

Mangold. They're actually in Eureka, IL.

I emailed them the other day, and the response was that they expect them no sooner than Dec. '04!!!

I know I'm not buying a Mustang in December in Illinois. :-)

The current version is already supercharged... without a completely new powerplant, I'm not sure that they can get a "substantial" increase. I suppose that would be a relative term...no wait! It would be a marketing term.

Getting a more power from the current Cobra 4.6 is just a pulley size away. Getting a "substantial" increase is easily accomplished using a twin screw blower in place of the Eaton, such as the one being used on the new GT. Using the twin screw on the 4.6, along with some tuning, Ford can easily get the next generation Mustang Cobra close to the 500 horse mark from the factory. The Supercharged 5.4L from the GT would be nice, but I don't think Ford can use it in the Mustang Cobra without a "substantial" price increase. The iron block 4.6 with a twin screw will have to do.
