OT: Anyone in Tennessee?

My hubby is eligible to retire this December, and both of us have been anxious to leave this liberal free-for-all here in California (though we are both natives)

I have been looking all over the states for someplace that would be nice to go, and think I have chosen the beautiful state of (confusion LOL) TN

Does anyone out there live there? If so, what can you tell me about it?

Now, this isn't saying he WILL retire, lord only knows he deserves it.. I just have to find a place where we can live comfortably.... and there is somewhere I can drive Shug!

TIA Kate

Kate, I can tell you that you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't try the foothills of Colorado. This is God's country. Gerry, who post here occasionally, also lives in Colorado and he must like it; after 10 years he's still here.

The mountains are beautiful (the ride to Estes Park from Loveland is awesome with the top down), the air clear, and most people are friendly, and most importantly, most elected officials are Republicans!

If you are ever in the Fort Collins area, I shall let you visit the Snart household, meet my wife, 2 cats and the beautiful, red Angelica. Of course we will drink Budweiser beer (the plant is visible from my kitchen patio), grill some steaks and watch the sun set over the mountains.

Tennessee? It's OK, but it pales in comparison to Colorado.

*L* If you'd picked Florida and near Tampa bay, you could have joined the local Mustang club and then this october driven Shug on the Bradenton drag strip for free one whole saturday. As many passes as you can manage. :-)

Well Kate,

I've just moved into Tennessee from New York myself. I'm in Memphis at the moment. I'm not sure whether you prefer city or country living, but as far as cities go Memphis isn't too bad. There are some nice historic areas, not to mention Graceland. In comparison to New York, every thing seems pretty cheap around here. Housing isn't bad, gas could be better, ciggarettes are ridiculously low, groceries are half the price they were in NY. If you have any school-aged children I'd suggest private school or home schooling, the city schools for the most part are pretty bad. When taking my little sister to register in the local high school, within 3 minutes of entering the office 5 students were dragged out in handcuffs. Needless to say we got a quick transfer to a marginally better school.

As far as the rest of Tennessee goes, I can't tell you in as much detail, but I've traveled through the state enough to know some. It is a pretty nice state. With the exception of a few cities here and there it seems pretty rural. The people are all really really nice. I'm still adjusting to the difference between NY people and TN people.

If I remember correctly you are in Cali. right? Have you ever experienced southern heat? I know in Cali you guys get sun, but believe me... Stepping out into 90 degree cali. weather is bearable, but step out into 90 degree weather here and it will knock you down. It is a very humid heat, feels like you're laying on your back and someone is sitting on your chest. It takes some getting used to, but EVERYTHING around here has central air, so it isn't so bad.

Wow, that went longer than I intended. Anyway, good luck!

kate,

ok I will throw in my 2 cents.

I have lived in Tampa, FL.. Reston, VA, Lakewood, CO and have spent most my life from childhood in Madison, WIS. I have through and stayed at just about every other corner of the U.S except northeast Maine area and Northwest Oregon area.

I've gotta say some of the most historical and active(for things to do) area was Reston and VA in general.. beautiful country. A little pricey though. Not much snow.

We go every year to South Dakota and honest to goodness just love that area. People are friendly, a lot of things to do and its a lot cheaper than anywhere i know. Snow can be bad though.

Colorado in general is one of the most unique places I have lived. Corn and farmlands to the east, Southwestern scene to the south, mountains to the west..and a little of all to the north. There is a lot to do out there.. not sure ont he prices anymore. Snow can be bad but it seemed to melt right away.

Wisconsin. a lot of nice people here. you have farmlands, glacier areas, caves and northern Wis is just the nicest place to get away. There is an island Madeline Island at the very northern tip where you can get away from most anyone. Summers can be hot..usually only 3 or 4 days really hot in the high 80's winters can be cold.. I have experienced 20 below zero with windchills of 90 below.. but it hasnt happened much recently.. It is usually around 10-20 degrees in the winter.. basically, we have all seasons here.

wife and I say after I retire we may move to South Dakota..we'll see if i make it.

Since you're interested in TN, consider attending the 40th (the BIG one) MCA anniversary shindig in Nashville next April 04. We're talking over

3000 cars. This way you can plan on places to visit and do something Mustang related too. You could even participate in the convoy of "Mustangs Across America" that leaves from LA and ends up in Nashville. Would certainly make for an interesting trip...I can see it now. Kate leading the pack.....

Hmmm well Tampa is an OK place, but I don't think I will be staying in this city for long, but it all depends. I may move over to Ft Lauderdale-Miramar because I have some family spread out around those areas. Although Tampa is very nice, it lacks some action...you visit downtown but it's always dead during the week/day/night unless you are in YBor city (the club scene) but that can get old quick. The beaches are beautiful however. Lots of concerts also. They say that Tampa and surrounding areas are for mostly retirees. The city still lacks growth!

I currently live in NC, very close to TN.

I have lived in TN, as well. I like NC better, I live in the foothills, only 20+ minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway for some nice cruising. An hour from Charlotte for some big city (well big for NC) life, Cherokee Casino is less than 2 hours away.

The area is beautiful, at the base of the Mountains, with the result of having milder winters than the higher elevations, but with cooler summers than a little further east.

Still we are only about 5 hours from the coast.

The good news is housing is cheap. The bad news, it's because jobs are scarce. The furniture and textile industry closings were terrible to us.

There are currently about 3,000 houses for sale in my county and we only have a population of about 90,000.

South Florida is crowded as hell, but you can't beat the weather - 12 months of top-down driving on roads with absolutely no potholes. Only track in the tri-state area worth mentioning is Moroso up in Palm Beach County. Very cool, but a bit of a trek from Central Broward let alone Miami-Dade. Don't know the economics of the Tampa area, but the weather's just about the same as down here.

Just look at the temps in Tennessee in the summer. It is miserable. You might want to check out Minnesota. The northern part is just beautiful. There are tons of lakes, and some of the northern back roads will make you grin as you pund that car around the corners. :)

Have you been to Tampa? The weather is the same in the summer months, but there's a huge difference in the winter months! I'm talking about atleast

10 - / + degrees average. South FL is overcrowded I agree, but there's always something to do there ya know? NO POTHOLES! (except 595 and south I95)

Well, I have been looking at TN because it is so pretty. Green, rolling hills, lots of trees, creeks and ponds all over the place. Kind of like where we both grew up, only not ruined by imports (the two legged kind) and liberals (the scaley slithering kind) We can get a helluva nice house out there with several acres for under $150k and jobs arent REALLY an issue because Dick will be retiring and we should be pretty comfortable.

The only thing that really concerns me is the humidity and if there is tons of snow. Out here in Cali, it gets hot.. and I mean HOT.. all summer it ran in the high 90's low 100s, it sucked. I know humidity is a big factor, and now it concerns me.

We would like to be where we can get to the ocean, within a day's drive or put the boat in the water and head down to it. If property sales are in a slump that is in our favor. We want to be where the population speaks english. Not spanish, mong, eubonics, iranian, aztec or whatever..

So if you guys know someplace like that, (not all that interested in Florida.. housing is a lot higher there.. and te idea of all those old guys in speedos freak me the hell out)!

I would be interested in hearing more about Colorado.. iffin ya think ya could put up with an onery ol broad like me that is!

What about AZ, Kate? It's beautiful up north! There's something magical about the desert, IMHO. If I had my way I'd live there half the year.
