OT: Chevy's Next Super Vette

The 505-HP Z06 apparently isn't enough. Now it seems an even more lethal monster will be unleashed. Enter a trimmed-down (only

2,900-pounds), 600-PLUS (note the *plus* part) - HP beast, to be aptly named "Stingray". The numbers are impressive enough by themselves, but add this data:

0-60 / 1/4 mile

Z06 -- 3169 pounds / 505HP = 3.8 & 11.6 Ford GT -- 3497 pounds / 550HP = 3.4 & 11.5 Ferrari 599 GTB -- 3750 pounds / 612HP = 3.5 & 11.2

911 Turbo -- 3495 pounds / 480 HP = 3.2 & 11.4

Stringray - 2,900 / at least 600 HP = ?

Looks like the first 10-second factory car to me...

If true, this will allow GM (if they are still alive) to increase the standard Corvette's hp, which in turn will make room for the 400-hp Camaro.

They're alive. The one to watch is Ford. Their health is nearing flat-line status.

I agree, Joe.

While the 505 HP Z06 will remain, I think it'll get some trickle-down technology/horsepower, allowing the standard Vette to move up. Guessing, I could see a 25-35P increase for the standard version and about 50 for the Z06. This way the top-level pony cars won't be nipping at the heels of the entry level model and it'll push the Z06 up to put the edge on the Viper. Patrick

Cars like this aren't designed to sell in huge numbers to save the corporation. The NSX, skyline, etc and so forth weren't built to make huge profits either.

As far as the 'geo-political' situation that would effect vehicles here in the USA, much of it has to do with how things are done here in the USA. If there was actual competition in gasoline, the prices would come down. The problem is, it takes the political process a decade just to break ground for a refinery. Politically people stand in the way of using the vast reserves of the americas oil that is profitable at US$40 a barrel.

To actually sell cars and be profitable, ford and GM need to build bread and butter cars that people actually _WANT_.
