OT... kinda sort, but there is a Mustang involved...

::delurks a bit::

So, everyone around here knows I drive a Focus, which I loving refer to as my baby pony, since the Mustang I wanted was cost prohibitive and shall continue to be so for a few year... especially after yesterday. So I was driving down the road, it was raining. The light was green, the woman in front of me was not moving, I tried to stop, but sadly, my car did not. I rear ended a Nissan Altima going probably 20 miles an hour. She hit the car in front of her. That driver left. No damage. The Nissan wasn't so lucky. The back end is destroyed and the back passenger tire is on a tilt. My car? The airbags deployed (thus smashing my windshield), driver's side seatbelt is fubar, and the bottom grill is bent... oh yes, and some paint transfer. Thing was, it was raining out, and lightning something awful. So when the burst of white hit me, I thought we got hit by lightning. And the dang powder that pops up from the airbags smells like burning something, so I immediately thought my car was on fire and jumped out. Then I realized I hit something. The lady was alright (oddly calm though), I was super apologetic, the cop was nice (all I got was a moving violation... sigh... traffic school), but AAA took forever to come get my car. If it hadn't been raining, my mom, who came up when I called her, would have driven it back home, but since we didn't want the glass further going, we towed it...

At least I won't be SOL for a car. Here's where the Stang comes in. Saturday we're driving up to Tampa to pick up my mom's new 05 Wrangler. we were going to fly, but flying would be about 200 bucks, but renting a car would be 60. she didn't want anything to do with the economy cars since my mother refuses to drive anything that's not a V8 save for my car and now her new Jeep (the Wrangler is a real stretch for her... being an inline 6... my dad spoiled her with big engines) . So we looked up rental cars, and Hertz has a Mustang (or comparable) in the standard section. That's what we're going to go pick up this afternoon. So I'm really hoping its the Mustang... Funny... this Jeep was a spur of the moment thing. She just decided to get it. It was either a Jeep or a Mustang GT. So, once again, we shall own three cars: The Land Yacht, the Focus, and now a Jeep.

Anyway, the moral of the story is... aside from going slower in the rain.... I'll never buy a Japanese car. never never never never. Heck, if I did that... dad would get up out of his grave and smack me around some... Between my brother's Corvette, boat and jetskis, the Jeep, and me trashing someone else's car, he's got to be turning.... all the men in the family, save my bro, their blood runs ford blue. I wonder if he'd approve of an Aston Martin.... oh, and btw, I've got pictures of the damage:

I thought aribags were supposed to save.. not destroy? That is a lot of force coming outta that thing for it to pop up and shatter the windshield like that.

I have never been on the recieving end of an airbag deployment (thankfully never will, I hope), are they supposed to have that much force during inflation?

It didn't hurt when it happened, I'm quite alright, but I've heard those bags come out with anywhere from 100 to 300 miles an hour of force (if that makes sense O_o) depending on who is talking like they're the expert.

The thing about them coming out, is it'll scare you out of your wits, this huge white explosion, and the powder stinks... sigh.

BTW, the Altima was a total loss.

Yes, I was lucky I didn't slam into the airbag or else my glasses would have been smashed into my face. Sometimes I wonder if side airbags would be better instead of front ones... As for seatbelt bruising, that happened to a girl friend of mine, a car t-boned her camry, and her and another friend were black and blue for a month.

Yep. Hit that airbag and your glasses would become extended wear contact lenses. Side bags and front bags serve two different purposes. Front keeps you from impacting and impaling on the steering wheel, or dash. Side keeps your heads from snapping against the side glass or door frame as the car and the strapped in portion of your body is propelled in the opposite direction. Just as the headrest is there to keep tour head from winding up in the back seat if you get hit from behind.

With the improvements in protection, they are moving toward the sort of capsule used in drag boats.
