OT: PING: Bill S. re: Ford Falcon

Bill -

I was wondering if you might have a lead on where i might be able to find any 70's Ford Falcons for sale?

I'm shooting a film that draws very heavily on Mad Max, and the director indicated he'd like one for the shoot. I tried to no avail on Ebay motors [shudder]...

Whether it would be rented or bought, it would have to be modified to support camera mounts, so one in pristine condition is both unneccesary and probably way too expensive for our budget.

The monza front-end would be a definite plus too ;-)

Anyway, thanks in advance!

I was going to refer you an importer of austrailian fords, but they tend to bring in either cars in nice shape and if they aren't they are generally fairly rare and desirable for restoration.

It's also obvious (due to mad-max) you are looking for the 1970.5 torino based falcons. So you could also use late 60s early 70s torinos too.

Oh also, this site seemed to be dedicated purely to Falcons up to 1970 1/2, whereas I'd be looking for something more from the mid-to-late 70's...I suppose that's why I passed it up...

unneccesary

Well don't get me wrong, it would be restored, but I don't want to take something in really great shape, tear it's body/paint up, and then rebuild it after that, you know?

The 1970.5 didn't look right though...it still looked a little too classic...was that the last year for the Falcons in the US, or anywhere? I was under the impression that there were Falcons from the later 70's.

Thanks for your help.

The mad max films used 1970s aussie ford falcons. The last year for the US falcon was 1970. The early model year cars were true falcons, while the later model year cars were stripped down torinos. Little in performance options as I recall too. The US ford that is closest to the Aussie falcon is the torino.

It sounds like you are on a tight buget so importing cars from austrailia isn't going to work for you. Maybe a 70.5 falcon with an MEP or mad max interceptor body kit? (there are such things, but they cost)

What Falcons are you "referring" to as Mid-Late 70s Models ?

US Domestic Falcon production ENDED with the 1970 Model year.

There is ONE exception to this as there actually WAS a 70.5 Falcon produced. Good luck finding one though.....

Bill -

It depends on the cost, pretty much. Our budget is just about 4 million dollars, which is really cheap if you can believe it!

I've been alotted about 17 grand for the vehicles, but I have to modify a couple of Darts and a Maverick, along with renting some bikes. I suppose I'm not actually tied down to an Australian Falcon, but I know if I go elsewhere the director is going to be less than happy (I'm not looking to do a direct copy off of Mad Max, just something reminiscent of that kind of squared off, late 70's look...I figured the falcon was a good place to start.)

I could probably get more money, but as it's kind of important for the vehicles to look a little older and run-down, I really don't want to mess with something that's really cherry...I would say I'm looking for something in the area of 2-4 grand, doesn't have to run, but can't have a lot of rust, as I'm only really supposed to be spending on running modifications.

Production office is based out of St. Louis, MO, but we're shooting out in Farmington, MO for the specific shots.

We aren't shooting until 2004, so I do have some time, and I haven't been given the full go-ahead yet, but I figured I could at least start looking, as I expected it to be kind of hard to find.

Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah, I believe the actual car was a 1973 ford XB GT Falcon? I've heard that a mid-70s fairmont could replicate it fairly well also...also someone mentioned a "John Goss Special"? Which I had never heard of before, but...all these cars are not domestics if I was informed correctly, which makes it kind of hard...

Yeah, as I mentioned in my response to Bill, I probably only have about 2-4 grand to spend on the base car, and while it doesn't have to run (engine/suspenion work is already budgeted), it can't have too much rust on it. It is something that if it comes out cool enough I would definetely keep and fix up, but that's for later ;-)

Thanks for your help, and hit me back if this gives you anything more to go off of. I appreciate all of the help!

Yeah an XB or XC would do it for you. A John Goss Special is just a special paint job they put on the Falcons after he won Bathurst. Don't listen to anyone who says you need a John Goss Special, GT351, Phase 4 or Cobra. They are all the more expensive ones and are probably hard to find in the US.

There was a rough John Goss special for sale in the USA awhile back. I was rather tempted to get it. There something like 250 of them built. And I would assume you are refering to an aussie fairmont, the US one is a fox platform car of the late 1970s.

I don't think I have never seen an aussie ford offered for less than 7 grand in the USA.

Yeah, 20 grand is a little out of my price range though ;-)

Thanks though.

Probably wreck 'em ;-)

No just kidding. I'd like to keep at least one of them, but I imagine the production will be selling them off to recoup expenses.

Now whether you'd be buying the process car or the slightly damaged process car is the real question ;-)

I can keep you posted (no pun intended) on what they're planning on doing with them, but seeing as I don't even actually have a go-ahead to build, it might be a bit pre-emptive to suppose....

Cool. Thanks for the tip, because I've had several people tell me just that...I'll keep my eye out.

I was, but does the US fairmont look anything like the aussie one? I'm really just looking for something that could work...

I kind of thought that might be the case...I'm trying to get more of a budget together, but if not, what are the chances there's something domestic that closely resembles?

I don't really know 70's cars that well. I don't actually need an EXACT mad max replica, because I'm not going to make it look exactly like the mad max car...so is there anything out there that's a good platform that looks interesting? (Mustangs have already been nixed, by the way...the bad guy drives a king cobra, so we can't have a mustang hero car!)

Thanks for all your continuing help and patience,

Nick
