OT: Surging issues with my 5.0

5.0 horsepower lawn mower that is. Any lawnphiles in here? Just started doing this. Replaced the gas as I thought it might be bad. Worked fine for a bit then started doing it again.

TIA,

Don Manning

I find the best thing to do with them is get a rebuild kit and redo them. They literally are a few dollors. The more popular ones you can often get a Wally's etc. I have a small engine guy about a mile from me so I just take the model # and serial # of the MOTOR in ( the mower make & model is useless to them) also the springs from the governor to the throttle may be broken or worn out. This can cause surging too. I have also had too pull the top shroud off and lube the governor vane pivot to allow smooth movement which can cause surging if it sticks too. HTH StuK

We only give advice here for Briggs and Stratton. Tell us it isn't an import.

If you can't find your part here then you need a new motor.

Actually, it is a Murray. Some parts interchange though.

A rebuild would suck. The mower is less than a year old.

Hmmm that does suck. Well if you think the gas went bad it may still behoove you to disassemble it and give it a good cleaning and reassemble it to rid the carb of any varnish. I would look at the governor vane as I mentioned also. Often the lube installed at the factory on anything often leaves something to be desired. Good Luck. StuK

Worked GREAT! That's not a lawn mower! That's a tractor! Hell, I have a tractor, a Kubota. Thanks for the link Dennis :)

That's quite a little tractor. Is that cab factory?

Our Kubota isn't anything like those... bit it IS 4WD!

The previous owner made it. He was a real old timer. When I bought it it was like I was going for an interview to date his daughter! That silver tube scavenges heat from the exhaust to heat the cab when I use it for snowblowing. In the winter there is usually a 3 foot drift right about where it is parked in that photo. I live in horse country so there are lots of tractors around here. A lot of the neighbours have little Kubota diesels. They are nice, I like the live PTO on them and hi lo gears etc. but they are too bendy when the real work needs doing. I usually end up pulling my next door neighbours Kubota out of the ditch at least once every winter despite his 4wd but he has turf tires and no chains.

BTW it looks like we really hijacked this thread... Sorry! ;^) StuK

I think the thread was finished anyway. I have not really had a chance to try out the Kubota yet. So fat, it's hubby's job. To tell the truth, I might like to keep it that way. I DO love my Husky though. I ask for and received a pull behind little trailer for it and I use that little lawn tractor all over the place out here.

great looking tractor, love the home made cab. They sure don't make them like that any more, (at least for less than 30K they don't).

2.3Sleeper opined in news: snipped-for-privacy@uni-berlin.de:

does it only surge with no load, on heavy load or all the time?

is the surge regular timing wise?

if it's that way all the time, the spring is too strong, weak or wrong length or the vane is sticking like stu said.

if only under load.. vane sticking or carb needs rebuild, or float level adjusted.

if you have the kind with integral carb over the tank, it is both sophisticated yet very simple... 2 bolts detaches the whole thing, crank vent hose and governor link only things to disconnect. there's a diaphragm gasket between carb and tank.. it's all you need to replace. just dont lose the o- ring and nylon keeper from the manifld coupling
