pepboys/ford lawsuit

Apparently Pepboys won a lawsuit against ford concerning the use of the name Futura. Judge ruled that the futura tire produced by pep boys was more worthy of the name than fords new sedan.

What kind of idiots are there? Ford has been using futura for oh, 40 years or so. Moe Larry and Curly certainly knew of it.

You'd think they'd be able to work together (think Wrangler) towards a mutually beneficial solution instead of going for each other's throats, er, wallets...

"Meanwhile, Ford · in keeping with its strategy to christen all Ford brand products with a name beginning with ^F~ · must come up with another name for its new midsize car."

Well, the name is obvious. Fairlane. Especially if this thing will be RWD. As the taurus replacement that means it's an intermediate, so it fits perfectly.

And beyond that, ford has been using futura in austrailia, so they didn't adbandon it... *shrug*

Excepting existing models, I assume.

Funderbird *might* work, but Fustang, Fobra, Fach Fun, and Fullitt simply don't. :)

Sounds like a plan to me.

That is enormously stupid since the original Ford Futura was around a lot longer than Pep Idiots. Not to mention WTF would Pep Idiots quibble about what would amount to free advertisment? Oh yeah, they're idiots.

As others have mentioned... Futura has been around for quite a while.. what's the problem ?

Also, what is the problem with a Tire and a Car having the same name ? I mean it's not like someone is going to go in and say "4 Futura's please... Oh, no I mean't I wanted four CARS, not just tires "

these ahole corps need to stop sueing each other for no real reason and spend more time on making a better product.

What's with this retro crap any way ? did somebody run out of names for cars ? I mean is a 2005 Futura go>

Ford still uses furtura in austrailia. but as an intermediate it should be called fairlane. Falcon would be good for a compact class car. (falcon-maverick-fairmont-tempo-countour)

Yeah, you're right. Fairlane would be more recognizable than Futura IMHO. The Fairlane 500 could come back as the performance version in place of the Taurus SHO.

It must be a larry, Moe and Curly thing. Doesn't Goodyear make a trire named 'Wrangler' and isn't that name also used for a Jeep model? Now if these can coexist peacefully, why not Futura?

Hell yeah. I am Chevy all the way though when it comes to the truckcars. The El Camino just looks better in my opinion.

The Elko never went away in Australia. They call it the Holden Ute. Here's a link:

In "SS" trim the Ute has the same engine as the Holden Monaro/GTO, but for Aus$40,400 vs Aus$59,950 for the Aussie Monaro -- a 33% discount. Apply the same discount to the GTO sticker of US$34,000 and you'd be at US$22,780.

A slightly milder Gen III SBC (235 kW vs. 245 kW) is available in the "S" model Ute, at Aus$32,270, or 47% off the Monaro price. The same discount from a GTO would come to US$18,020.

So what do you think are the chances of GM importing the Holden Ute to the US, offering GTO-level performance with a MSRP in the high teens, low 20's? If you say not great, I'd agree.

How about Falcon as in Fairlane-Torino-1970.5 Falcon-Falcon XA-Falcon XB-Falcon XC-Ford Landau-Falcon Fairmont... ALL argueably mid-size cars

- full-size by today's standards? The Falcon name is ripe for the picking! The SHO replacement could be the Falcon "Torino" or Falcon "Gran Torino".

Nah, Fairlane is IMHO a better choice, especially if they were to add the Torino moniker since the Torino was a fancy Fairlane. You could have Fairlane, Fairlane 500, Fairlane GT, Torino and Gran Torino. That would all be overkill anyways since Ford wouldn't probably go through all the hassle of naming each style and having to make different badges for each. Maybe 3 like the 'stang. Base, GT, and Cobra.

They have in the form of those SUV's that are kinds SUT's or whatever they call the mostrosities. Then again, trucks like the Lightning make sports-car performance available with a bed, but it still looks like a truck....
