Question: 05 and newer GT on snow? ok or?

I haven't had a stang in a few years.. had a '93 Cobra I sold a few years back. So I am considering trading my car in for a newer GT.

I've been out looking and have got the "bug".

How is the handling with the tires & rims that all GT's come equipped with? I live in WIS and we can get anywhere from 1" to 3" in an average winter snowfall. Will the car handle well enough?

thanks. Dave

Dave,

Handle as in handle the snow? The new GTs come with traction control and have much better weight distribution than the older Mustangs, so it'll be an improvement for sure over your '93 Cobra. That said, I'd still buy a set of snow tires and have them mounted and ready on an extra set of wheels.

There are 2 stock wheel sizes for the GT - 17" and 18". The 17" version has the Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S and the 18" has BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS. Both are rated for light snow.

I have the BFGoodrich tires and have driven them in snow depths from 1" to 4" in hilly Cincinnati, OH. Provided you are ginger with the throttle, shifting, and braking, they do move the car along OK. I do add weight to the trunk (2 70lb bags of sand over the area of the axle) to help the weight distribution a bit more.

The optimal traction option would be to use snow tires, but I personally have a hard time justifying them because of the weather in Cincinnati and my area of town. We only get a few days out of the winter season where snow might be down on the roads. The car does travel, and the current version of the traction control system works reasonably well.

The only place I have trouble is when trying to go up a steep hill. That is definitely a challenge.

I do not have experience with the Pirelli tires.
