Re: Stupid Question of the Day - Fuel "Enhancers"

** I got into an argument with a friend. He claims that since I bought a Mustang ** I'll want to take care of it to the fullest extent.

The owner's manual suggests 87 octane fuel, which is what the engine was designed for. Using higher octane fuel in your engine is a waste of money. Fuel already contains detergents that keep injectors clean; no additional additives are needed nor desired. Tell your Bud to MHOB.

JD is mostly right. Most stock motors only require 87 octane fuel, it isn't untill the compression ration goes up that you need a slower fuel to burn. In actualality, knowing that the higher octane burners slower, when you apply that fuel to a motor that doesn't need it, It 'could' actually build up residue and decrease performance.

The only thing I disagree on is the additives that fuel has in it. Every oil company puts different additives into their fuels. And none of them use the best available products. They make there money off of selling lots of gas, not making cars more economical by providing a fuel that burns more effectivly. There are a few products that do actually clean, and remove deposits thus providing better performance over another car that is not as clean inside. Additives will have almost none or no effect on a new car though. Most additives 'slick 50' ect. just gum the motor up worse over time.

Much Love JD Love the car!
