Re: What horsepower does would a stock 97 GT4.6L put out with a cold air intake?

I believe a 97 puts out 215.. maybe 220... I know a 98 GT (like mine) has

225 stock. Cold air.... I'd say maybe a 3-4hp increase tops. I have a cold air intake... nothing that noticeable.. if noticeable at all.

Zero, nada, zilch.

Your car already has a cold air intake. It is designed to give laminar air flow through the mass air sensor. It is more than sufficient to meet the air flow needs of your stock engine.

An aftermarket "cold air intake" adds a 90 degree bend directly in front of the mass air sensor and it screws up the airflow through the sensor. This will degrade driveability and hurt performance UNLESS you also purchase a mass air sensor that can deal with the nonuniform air flow (such as the Pro-M Univer). Once you have done all that and spent all that money, you will not end up with any more performance on your stock engine. You will however have a pretty intake. If that is worth over $500 to you, enjoy.

Hey man, it's all about how it looks these days anyway, right? Just ask any Honda owner!

rofl... so what exactly are you trying to say Larry?

I'd say you're pretty well dead-on accurate with a couple of asterisks....

The CAI's with the 90 degree bend (Mac, BBK) do indeed create an inherent problem with airflow but there's a fairly simple solution commonly known as "The CAI Tweak" that you can read about here:

you re-align the MAF to match the re-directed airflow. There are some CAI's (at least one, anyway) that don't have the 90 degree bend The most common of these is from K&N called the FIPK. I think WMS makes one also but maybe someone else can confirm that. In any case, on an otherwise-stock motor, any CAI isn't going to amount to a hill of beans performance-wise.

As to the original poster's question, a stock 97 GT was rated at 215 and typically puts about 188 or so to the wheels if it's a 5-spd, a touch less if its an AODE car.

Speaking from personal experience, the CAI "tweak" was less than satisfactory. The real solution was the Pro-M Univer.. that gave performance AND drivability.
