RE: Yup Moron still needs help?!

Okie dokie Muskateers!

Here's the new scoop.......so there I was last night playing with the firing order in order to get the car running, and low and behold...Mr.Matt did in fact feed me the right information and I got the firing order down.......So I crank her over....rat-tat-tat...VROOM....and my face lit up like a little school girl...........She lives she lives...................muhahahahahahaha!!!!! I felt like I just one a gold medal in the Olympics. This whole engine nightmare started with just a simple waterpump gasket change.....we all know how one thing leads to another!

So there I am grinning like a MORON....thinking..Yeah baby--WHO DA MAN----WHO DA MAN!!!!!! I AM DAMMIT!...with a little help from my friends...( that would be you guys!)..........then I get out of the car....and I turn around to look at my car...HOLY CRAP...GARAGE IS SMOKING LIKE 4 JUNKIES IN A TOILET!..........not good.....run in, open up the windows....get a fan......trying to blow all the damned smoke out......figure...hey..I have an air compressor....use that!..CHA_CHING...that worked for the most part!!!! What a god awful mess I made.......then I HEAR THIS...........RICK.....WHAT THE (^#(#$(@#() ARE YOU DOING.....THE HOUSE SMELLS LIKE GAS AND SMOKE>>>Ooopsie! G/F is looking at me in anger and I still have this huge smile on my face....SHE LIVES...SHE LIVES....!!!

Now for the good part........I hear all kinds of tinking coming from the motor......sounds No person wants to hear...klink, klink...freaking KLINK....what's this you ask................hmmmmmmmmmmmm....Rockers are knocking like the tax man at your door!!! Okie dokie, turn off car.....open beer!.............Yummy!.........okay.....so I take off one valve cover...do the cardboard trick....not to put anymore oil on the floor or my recently assembled and painted motor.......(screw the floor...a little kitty litter..and it's good as gold)...so now my neighbour is over cuz he heard the roars from hell; ripping through my garage echoing..." DIE FRENCHIE, DIE!"..........(he has a 67 camaro..very nice car)....I get in, to flame her back up so we can fix the rockers that were knocking.....lookie here...car won't start......hmmmmmmmm....he looks at me and says in his french accent...."wat da ell are u doing....puss da gas tabarnac"....I was like" I am....F*CK you frenchie".....the carburator choke won't open...............insert screwdriver....................VROOOM...SWEEEEEEET CANDY!.....so we torque them all down...BYE BYE Knocking.....isn't life beautiful....??? Oh look....prestone........now what......?? Fitting on the intake is leaking...remove....put on some wonderful liquid teflon...re-insert and tighten.....BEAUTIFUL!.....okay----so now I move the car outside into the street to run her and make sure there are no other major leaks.............run her for 15 minutes..........beautiful.......!!! turn her off.....try and start her again.....no can do............the choke keeps staying closed.........now this is my problem. READY!

My Brother in law rebuilt my carb........it is a HOLLY

600 CFM...the stock carb that came with the 84 gt.....and the choke won't open......and aslo at around 2500 RPM...she bogs and if you keep the throttle increasing, she catches back again and continues her quest to 5000RPM.......what could this be......is it the Floats or a IDLE MIXTURE problem? I would appreciate all the help I can get. Oh yeah....the fuel pump is good.....!

Thanks Guys

Rick

This is something simple more than likely. I am not sure how that particular carb of yours is layed out, but the prime suspect here is the spring that opens the choke. It could be that the linkage is not connected to it, it's installed incorrectly, in backwards, or the wrong spring. Then there is the electrical connection if it's electrically heated. There is also a setting for the choke as well.

The wrong spring could act to close the choke as it warms up.

The float controls filling the fuel bowl, so it's probably ok as it's getting the fuel. It sounds fairly minor, someone else guessed the accelerator pump. idle mixture would also not have anything to do with it. hmm...

So GOOD! Brings back memories... and ALSO reminds me why I never will willingly have another carbed car.

I WOULD guess it's the float OR the secondary setup.

I love carbs, especially Holley carbs! they look good, run great and are easy to work on if you know what you're doing. Also, you don't have to worry about a $700.00+ ECU going out and stranding you on the side of the road.

Guess what... I have NEVER encountered (persoanlly or acquaintance) a failure that was FOR SURE the ECU... I know of several that shops have charged to replace... one of which was a fraud - Bad ECU power relay.

NOt saying they dont.

And, in 40 years of working on cars, I just never had a touch to get a carb set up just right... I'm a 1's & 0's guy by training and inclination.

I've never rebuilt a holley, but I did rebuild an early 80s computer controlled quadrajet. It actually went really well and wasn't as bad as I thought. The older Qjets still seem scary though.
