Recommended anti-theft devices for `03 GT Vert

Hello,

Just bought a new `03 GT convertible, auto... should have it next week.

What are some recommended anti-theft devices for the Mustang, other than alarm systems? Is there a special "club" or perhaps steering wheel to brake pedal lock that would be recommended? Or shifter lock? (I've got an auto.) Any other ideas or tricks with respect to ignition kill switches or anything like that on these cars?

Alarms might be helpful on occasion, but I am not a fan of alarms. I even witnessed a car get stolen while the alarm was screaming away.... guy raced off before I could do anything about it. I am more into the idea of creating mechanical obstacles in the car to slow down and/or discourage a potential thief.

On my old `76 Firebird, I had a serious custom built steering column collar lock (which covered the entire ignition switch area), as well as a well hidden ignition kill switch... I felt this was adequate for that car... but the new Stang is a different animal. So what are all you guys using? Any info appreciated. Thanks!

I agree, alarms are generally a waste of time and money. When's the last time you saw somebody running across the mall parking lot to respond to a car alarm? Anyway, as for mechanical devices, one that you design and install yourself will be the most effective since nobody else has one and a thief would have no way of learning about it ahead of time. All you're really trying to do is slow the thief down. So if you place a switch in the fuel pump circuit, you could hide it anywhere and it would prevent the vehicle from starting, no matter what. For example, use a push button switch and install in the the glove box. Or, you could get a boot for the front wheel.

A yellow post-it note that reads, "This vehicle protected by C-4 explosive under driver's seat. Device is armed upon remote moving more than 50' from vehicle!" And just have it stuck to the instrument cluster.

Hey, I like that one. Always keep them guessing.

The Club is worthless. All you have to do is cut the sterring wheel with a saw to take the club off. If the thief is slow it may take 20 seconds.

No one pays attention to car alarms. The only thing that works besides personally protecting the car (care where you park or packing heat) is a GPS tracking system such as OnStar (not available on Fords).

Agreed. Which is mine has a carjack switch and a ignition cutoff. Granted, that will only stall them. But then again, I installed thsi one myself and it's not in the usual spot with the wiring also being obscured. :-) Next will be the fuel cutoff switch which can be wired into the wires going to the emergency switch in the trunk. Which are located under the driver's side door sill. I used to have a How-To on that but can't find it.

The electronic key which comes with your GT, is a pretty powerful deterrent to theft. The only way to really steal the car, is to physically pick it up and carry it away. There is no way for a thief to drive the car away under its own power.

Well, unless, he has your keys too. :)

Good point. Only the actual owner would do anything to stop a theft in progress. A pager alarm would alert them, and only them.
