My Gatorbacks are just about gone at 15k miles. Went to Tire Rack and there are too many tires and too many negative comments about every one of them (especially Gatorbacks)! Any recommendations, experiences? TIA
'01 GT here, too. I replaced my original GoodYears at 45K with a set of Potenzas.
Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em!
I hear the suck in the ice and snow, but I live in Birmingham, so that wasn't a concern for me.
Here's the thread from when I asked the same question:

I replaced all 4 tires on my 2000 GT with Yokoahma AVS ES 100's, Good tire & Good price. Also tried the Sumitomo's on the rear of a '98 GT and didn't like them at all, gave the car a "squirly" feeling.
I remember wasting the gatorbacks pretty quick on my '87 years ago. Now I use Dean HPZ's. Best price I could find on a Z rated tire and they handle nice on dry pavement. Can't say much about wet weather handling, as I don't take it out much when rain is in the forecast.
I used these on my 95GT a while back. They were pretty good tires on dry roads, but not great in the rain. Also, when they got older they became pretty noisy.
A Mustang GT does not have IRS, and any suspension system that's out of alignment will wear the tires just as quickly. 15K miles on the Goodyears is about average, I only got 18K out of them on my '00 GT.

Potenza's are excellent, though poor performers in very cold weather below freezing and they're noisy at speed. Mine are noisier than usual because of the Bullitt suspension. Great traction in the rain though, and they're unbelievable on dry roads. The rim protection is a plus.
I must have the best gators ever built as I have 31,000 on them on still going strong. Then again I baby the stang and never leave rubber and don't push the stang.
Check out the recomendations for the Firestone SZ50EP. I did and I found they rated the highest. So I bought 'em... sweetest set of tires I've ever owned!

I managed almost 35,000 on mine, and they were still servicible when I replaced them. They were quieter than the new Potenzas, and the ride was more civilized.
I've got over 40k on my 2nd set of Gatorbacks. I'm torn between the Firehawk SZ50s you mentioned and the Eagle F1s. The 'stang isn't my daily driver, and I want sticky tires :) Handling is top priority.
I'll second the Firestone Firehawks SZ50's. I'm on my 2nd set for my '92 GT vert. Good reviews, excellent handling in wet & dry. Wouldn't take them anywhere near ice & snow tho.
I have Sumitomo HTR+ on my "00 GT". They are great on wet pavement and even weren't too bad in 4 inches of snow (I know it's a crime taking it out in the snow, but the other choice is the wife's minivan, which I drove for 15 years before I bought my Stang). The price was right too at $96 per.
I bought Kuhmo tires for my stang since they were cheap and I seem to go through tires to fast 8)
I dont think I would do it again as they seem to want to follow every little crack in the street. Otherwise they are a good Z rated all weather tire though.
