Smoke coming out of heater/ ac vents

Hi, I went to look at a '88 gt and everything looked good. Then I took it out for a test drive and while I was driving it a little bit of smoke started to come out of the ac/heater vents. The guy who was selling it said it was the heater hose. Does this sound correct? I dont see how this is possible.

Thanks, Danny

What did it smell like, coolant or something burning? John

Could it have been steam, not smoke?

If that's the case, then it's the heater core. Those suck on the 5.0's that have AC! Check the passenger side floor and see if it is damp. Also, turn on the defroster and see if the window steams up from the inside.

Not the heater hose, the heater CORE. The biggest pain in the ass to replace in the whole car.

They suck on all '88 Mustangs as even the non AC cars use the same heater box, not like the '86 and older cars. The dash will have to come out regardless of AC or not. StuK

Danny... this car doesn't sound like the car for you.... You haven't bought it yet and you are already in a state of denial.

You sound young and inexperienced..... enlist help in the purchase of your first car. Listen closely.

If it does it only with the a/c on, it could be that the a/c just needs some attention, especially if there's no water or dampness on the passenger side floor (the infamous heater box leak that everyone's been talking about).

At any rate, have the owner fix it or walk away.

Hmmmm. It is not likely to be anything burning so it is not smoke. Anything burning in a car would be some sort of plastic or rubber and would leave you choking on the fumes. A coolant leak should have a slight odor and you should find water collecting somewhere. John

its probably the heater core leaking(with that car it is a 6 to 8 hr. job by a trained mechanic to repair it)... the heater core probably cost about $15 but the labor is gonna be a bitch to do.. might cost you up to $900 or more to have it fixed if you have to go to a dealer... you can call them up and they can give you the time that it takes to do the job from the time book.. i would not go for that car unless you can get the owner to come down on the price and you know how to do it yourself and save on the car???

if it did not have a smell they probably did not have coolant in the car and only water in the system.. with coolant in the car your eyes would be burning from the fumes in the car from the antifreeze.......... and with no smell you know its not burning, its moisture from the leaking heater core.....
