Transmission Cost

Just picked up a '96 Ranger (120K miles) to use for daily stuff (hauling the dog, Home Depot trips, quick trips to whatever). Going to garage the Cobra and preserve better and not use for hauling a 106 lb. Labrador...etc. LOL! Got it for a great price ($1.4K) but was told it needs a new/rebuilt transmission. Well, it does. Slips between 2nd and 3rd and hardly will go in reverse. My question to the group is, should I spend money on a filter/fluid change/Slick50 additive or go straight to my local AAMCO? Prices I've received from independent merchants are all over $1K. Seems high. I don't know that much about trannies but do know they're a pain and expensive when they go south.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's kind of a risk, but check out the bone yards. If you can get a used one for $300-400, it may be worth it.
