Twin Screw rocks!

Yeah, so, the blower came in last Thursday and I installed it over the weekend :). Kenne Bell Blowzilla 2200, Kenne Bell Boost-a-Pump, and a Diablo Motorsport MAFia all went on.

The installation went fine with no serious hiccups and just a few moments of drama. The boost bypass vaccuum line was a royal bitch to get on and there's a nut on the firewall that I had to use an open end wrench on: turn a tiny bit, flip wrench, turn a tiny bit, flip wrench, ....sheesh :).

Mr. Bell needs to update his instructions. The instruction were clearly for an earlier version of the blower. Furthermore, just about every reference for the 8mm bolts were transposed with the references for the

10mm bolts. None of these were big issues, just annoyances.

More annoying, as I cleaned up I found this little bag of bolts labeled "Intercooler Bolts". I check out the instructions and they clearly say to use the OEM bolts. What gives? Well, a little research and it turns out some folks have broken their bolts getting them off the IC, and the early versions of the KB discharge plate were not drilled deep enough for the stock bolts. My bolts went in fine and didn't break so I didn't need them, but it would have been nice to have had this issue called out.

The last thing that happened was on startup. She fired right up and made a nice knocking sound. Yep, panic set in. What could I have dropped in there? So, fire her up again, and listen closely. Not quite a knock but still loud as heck. I start probing with a "stethoscope" and it's not coming from the heads, the blower, the lower intake. What the...? I blip the throttle and I hear the boost bypass close and the sound vanishes. This was some sort of startup issue that, again, it sure would have been nice to have been warned about.

But it was worth it :). The thing sounds good and makes boost *fast*. The car has changed character at all throttle levels and is more much more responsive. This kinda makes sense since the efficiency improvement should exist everywhere, even when freewheeling, but I wouldn't have thought it would be this noticable. And I may be hypersenstive but I think the car's exhaust is louder now. I dunno.

I haven't got on it yet because I'm running a Predator pulley tune that was built around the Eaton. It should be close but I'm not going to risk it until I've seen a dyno run. I did pull some timing and richen up the mixture, just in case :). I should be hitting the dyno in a day or two ;).

Dan,

Do you have dyno numbers from before the installation? If so, could you please post a before/after comparison.

Thanks, Bob '03 Cobra coupe

Killer, Dan!!!!!!!! :DDD

At least you have enough self control to back off the throttle until it's tuned for the new blower... I know a lot of people wouldn't. Boy that'd be a sucky situation if you broke something by lack of self control ;). But cool man... be sure to report back with before/after dyno numbers!! I bet that beast is full of torque!

Great story, now tell me... does my "Jealousy green" show all the way from here???

The last measurements from the Eaton were (SAE) 465 rwhp / 502 rwtq. Up here, in what was good air for this altitude (CF 1.19), that was 390 rwhp / 422 rwtq.

I'm shooting for 500 actual rwhp, which I won't be able to achieve, probably, with the current upper pulley without running the tune harder than I'm comfortable with. The peak torque won't change much. I'm guesstimating I'll reach 450'ish actual rwhp at this stage.

I'll post a fuller comparison when I get the job done.

hey congrats - and thanks for the nice informative write up

2 questions-

- didnt the kb setup come with a designated chip? why are you still running the predator tune?

- would you recommend saving up $$ and going right for the twin screw blower first instead of pulleying the eaton first? i am very tempted to pulley

It's tough to do, though :).

Yes, but I have a Diablo tuner with a dynamometer working right down the street from me :). The KB chip would be fine but a custom dyno tune will be much better ;).

It really depends on your goals, finances, and patience. Without getting radical and using chillers and N2O, but with all the bolt-ons possible and a good tune, the most peak power you can get out of a stock Eaton is somewhere between 460 to 480 rwhp. You can bump this up to around 520 rwhp with a ported Eaton. Beyond that it takes a lot of work, another power added (N2O), or a different blower/pressure induction system.

Now, the thing is, if your goals are modest, a pulley and tune on a stock blower makes great power and costs only about $300 to $450 with a Lightning pulley and chip/flash tuner.

For a little more power, the ported blowers cost $400 to $500 with core exchange. Plus tune that's less than a $k for mild gobs of power.

The KB and Whipple cost $3000+ and you can pretty much make a typical car unsteetable with them.

Just to complete the comparison, turbo kits cost $6000+ but you can make unholy, unspeakable power.

In fact, despite my desire for a turbo kit, I'd still have the Eaton if I could get to 500 rwhp actual without working too hard. Even the ported Eaton would require some effort beyond simple boost/tuning work to get where I want to be.

If you feel the urge to make more power than you can achieve with the Eaton, sooner than later, then probably saving for the KB or Whipple is worth it :).

The other side of this issue, the process of getting there in stages is absolutely the best way to learn all about the car, what it's capable of, and how it behaves to changes. Also, for me, it was all about this process anyway, so I'm not at all unhappy with spending the money to get where I'm at now. I wouldn't skip it if I had to do it all over again ;).

Yeah, I like it with a set of twins myself. Blondes; preferably with large maracas.
