Yeah, so, the blower came in last Thursday and I installed it over the weekend :). Kenne Bell Blowzilla 2200, Kenne Bell Boost-a-Pump, and a Diablo Motorsport MAFia all went on.
The installation went fine with no serious hiccups and just a few moments of drama. The boost bypass vaccuum line was a royal bitch to get on and there's a nut on the firewall that I had to use an open end wrench on: turn a tiny bit, flip wrench, turn a tiny bit, flip wrench, ....sheesh :).
Mr. Bell needs to update his instructions. The instruction were clearly for an earlier version of the blower. Furthermore, just about every reference for the 8mm bolts were transposed with the references for the
10mm bolts. None of these were big issues, just annoyances.More annoying, as I cleaned up I found this little bag of bolts labeled "Intercooler Bolts". I check out the instructions and they clearly say to use the OEM bolts. What gives? Well, a little research and it turns out some folks have broken their bolts getting them off the IC, and the early versions of the KB discharge plate were not drilled deep enough for the stock bolts. My bolts went in fine and didn't break so I didn't need them, but it would have been nice to have had this issue called out.
The last thing that happened was on startup. She fired right up and made a nice knocking sound. Yep, panic set in. What could I have dropped in there? So, fire her up again, and listen closely. Not quite a knock but still loud as heck. I start probing with a "stethoscope" and it's not coming from the heads, the blower, the lower intake. What the...? I blip the throttle and I hear the boost bypass close and the sound vanishes. This was some sort of startup issue that, again, it sure would have been nice to have been warned about.
But it was worth it :). The thing sounds good and makes boost *fast*. The car has changed character at all throttle levels and is more much more responsive. This kinda makes sense since the efficiency improvement should exist everywhere, even when freewheeling, but I wouldn't have thought it would be this noticable. And I may be hypersenstive but I think the car's exhaust is louder now. I dunno.
I haven't got on it yet because I'm running a Predator pulley tune that was built around the Eaton. It should be close but I'm not going to risk it until I've seen a dyno run. I did pull some timing and richen up the mixture, just in case :). I should be hitting the dyno in a day or two ;).
