What headers for 66 coupe and GT40P heads?

A buddy of mine is working on a '66 coupe with a 289. He has installed Ford GT-40P heads on the engine. He has also purchased a set of Hedman long tube headers for a stock 289/302. Surprise, the headers won't fit the heads! Does anyone know what the correct headers would be for this application (or is there another solution)?

Thanks in advance, Richard

This is no surprise, as the Ford Performance catalog tells you in plain English that the heads are for Explorers and that regular manifolds/headers will not fit. This is why the heads are so inexpensive. I've seen headers advertised for early Mustangs for over $500.00 I don't remember who made them. I think Summit lists them. Buying a pair of Y303 aluminum GT-40 heads would cost less in the long haul as several sets of headers will burn through during the life span of your budget heads...

I would check with Central Coast Mustang (may no longer be in business) as they were having Mac manufacture headers for the 79-95 body styles for use w/ the GT40P's. I have a set in our 97 5.0 coupe w/ the"P" motor. Or try contacting Mustangs Plus here in Stockton, CA.

as I recall them having "P" heads on an early coupe, I think they used a set of the old tri-Y's.

I have a set of GT40P heads on my 302 in a 1969 fairlane. What I got to work is a set of reproduction HI-PO exhaust manifolds from Canadian Mustang. They fit perfect and the plugs clear just fine. If you must have headers Coast Mustang sells Tri-y headers. I bought a set from them but they did not fit properly, the pitman arm hit them.

How much did Hi-Po exhaust manifold cost? I have Tri-y headers in my '66 Mustang and pitman arm also hits them.

Thanks for the information. I have Edelbrock RPM aluminium heads on my 289, do you think that cast iron Hi-Po exhaust manifold is too small to those heads? I'm very tired to Tri-y headers because those hits to pitman arm and steering wheel turns only 2 rounds to left =(

Same exhaust manifolds go for around $300 US. Got mine from Virginia Classic Mustang but Mustangs Plus and many others carry them.
