Which speedo gear....

Okay...I am going to have some goodies in the very near future.

  1. Headers
  2. Aluminum driveshaft
  3. Driveshaft safety loop
  4. Gears

Since I am going with 4.10's...what speedo gear do I need?

Where IS the speedo gear anyway? (I realize this doesn't help you at all, sorry)

To do it right you need to change the drive gear as well as the driven gear. That is assuming you have a T5. With a t5 you need the black 6 tooth drive gear (e3zz-b-17285) along with a black 20 tooth driven gear (c1dz-a-17271). You could use one of those white 23 tooth Jeep gears, but they don't hold up and you never know what the little pieces of plastic can plug up in your tranny. If you have an automatic your pretty much stuck with the Jeep gear.

Driven Gear = Drive Gear x Rear Gear x Tire RPM¹ / 1000

¹Get RPM from tire manufacturer. OEM tires are at ~800-815 RPM.

OE drive gear (manual and auto):

7T - '83-mid '89 V8 and '96-'98 Cobra 8T - mid '89-'98 V8 exc. Cobra

Driven Gears available: 16T, 18T, 19T, 20T, 21T, 23T* Drive Gears available: 6T, 7T, 8T

*Not availale from Ford. Not recommended. Change to 6T or 7T drive gear instead and use the appropriate driven gear.

Speedometer drive gear is on the inside of the transmission, on the output shaft. Speedometer driven gear is on the transmission end of the speedometer cable.

Speedometer driven gear is changed very easily. Remove the cable from the transmission, and pull the gear off and replace. Attaching hardware should be self-explanatory. If you can't figure out how to remove a machine bolt and a couple of clips, you shouldn't be doing this.

Speedometer drive gear is changed in a manual by removing the tailshaft housing/extension housing and replacing the gear on the output shaft.

Speedometer drive gear is changed in an auto by tearing the transmission down and replacing the entire output shaft.
