Winter Snow tires for 05' Mustang

Hi all, I have a 05 Mustang GT. I wanted to know if i will need to put on snow tires for the car. The cheapest ones i checked run for around $500 for set of 4 and that is without the installation. I live in Connecticut so we get a fair share of snow here. Please advise.

Thanks, Surya

That depends: Do you get much snow? :)

That's not bad; a set for Dad's Jetta ran about $900 with steel wheels, installed.

Yeah, CT can get some major snow. In that case, get real snow tires. Mounted on steel wheels. And throw a couple bags of sand or kitty litter in the trunk. And carry a winter "emergency" kit.

Here's what TireRack has for an '05 that's good:

Their "Performance Winter" tires are considered a trade-off - better dry road handling with snow and ice performance slightly compromised. "Studless Ice & Snow" tires are, as you've probably guessed, good in ice and snow, but wear relatively quickly on dry pavement.

The November 2005 Consumer Reports has an article on tires:

All season tires, if icy roads are not a factor: Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread (excellent wet and dry, very good hydroplaning and snow, fair ice, very quiet) Hankook Mileage Plus II H725 (very good dry, wet, hydroplaning, snow, but fair ice) Yokohama Avid TRZ (excellent dry and hydroplaning, very good wet and snow, but fair ice)

Best all season for all weather conditions: Michelin X Radial (very good snow, ice, hydroplaning, good snow, sold only to members of shopping clubs) Michelin HydroEdge (excellent dry, very good wet, very good ice, good snow, performs capably but is noisier with mediocre hydroplaning)

Best severe winter tires: Michelin X-ice (excellent on ice and snow, but fair hydroplaning, wet and dry braking) Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice (good on ice, excellent on snow, but fair hydroplaning, wet and dry braking) Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 (excellent on ice and very good on snow, good dry, fair wet and fair hydroplaning)
