2002 Sentra Intermittent Problem starting can't shift to drive

Have a 2002 Sentra with automatic transmission and 35000 miles. Starting several months ago I would go to start the car but when I put the key in the ignition and turned the engine would not turn over. The dash lights would not dim (indicating no load being placed on the battery) It acted as if the car was trying to be started with the shift in drive and some sort of lock wasn't unengaging. This has happened about a dozen times over the last several months. So far if I let the car sit for a minute or two, it will finally kick in and start fine. I know it's not the battery as it has been replaced. I'm leaning towards whatever safety lock mechanism keeps one from starting with the car in drive. Anyone else experience this issue, if so did it get worse and what did it cost to get it fixed.

Thanks,

-Mike

My wife's 98 Altima does that every so often. I agree its the shift lock mechanism. I tell her to push hard on the brake pedal, shift from P-R-N-D-L and back again, then start the car. Works every time.
