240SX Transmission quote question

I have a 93 240SX which has about 190,000 miles on it. I want to keep the car for at least another year and everything is in great shape but I ran into some transmission (manual) problems with gears grinding. I was given an estimate of $1550 which includes labor, replacing 2nd and

3rd gear and some other parts I don't remember the name of (bearings?). I've never been to this autoshop before so I'm wondering if this sounds like a reasonable price or is it too high?

Fitting expensive new gearbox parts means it's way too much. Should never replace one gear of a pair as it will have bedded to the other gear which will usually fail if made to bed to a new gear. Be OK for

20-30K miles but a rwd SX is a car you want to keep forever and use as a daily driver. Can't replace 2nd and/or 3rd without doing the layshaft too as the gears are forged with the layshaft. As 1st is also part of the layshaft it should be replaced too. Just get a second hand box from a wreckers yard. Labour should be same as for a new clutch - about 3 hours tops but should be less than 2. If you shop around you will find at least a 100% variation in shop rates. If the clutch has done more than 70K miles it's about half worn and it may be best to fit a new one while the box is off.

Someone with local knowledge will be able to tell you what other Nissan's have gearboxes that fit. As they all have KA engines, later

240SX S14 or S14a may yield a low milage box that fits?

In the UK I got a 80K mile (R)S13 box off Ebay for £90 (GBP). Motor factor supplied 3 piece clutch kit for £95, crank rear oil seal £15 and 5L synth oil for g/box and diff £20. Wasn't worth me getting my hands dirty doing it as a local clutch specialist offered to do it for £70. Nice easy rwd job in between cursing a 4wd Pulsar GTi-R and Ford RS2000 with weird belt driven abs front brakes. Total = £290. If your total comes out over $750 it's too much.

Maybe it's fed up with 155bhp and it's asking for a 200bhp SR20DET swap - about $4.5k.

By "2nd and 3rd gear" they probably mean the sycronisers, the gears themselves don't "grind" when shifting. And Peter is wrong, gears in modern transmissions can easily be replaced individually with no problems if the opposing gear is OK i.e. only the selector teeth on the gear is damaged. The price sounds OK, just wondering if you've tried synthetic fuild or using ATF in it first? Sometimes that will fix the problem, unless the bearings are making noise too.

you can find used tranny's for around 500 bucks and have them installed for about the same.

besides you can buy a factory new/rebuilt tranny for a few hundred bucks more than the rebuilt unit costs

If you are located in the States you might want to click on the attached link & see if you can locate a local chapter...it's possible that a local member could be selling a used 240SX transmission at an affordable price that might meet your needs.

If that doesn't work, then try these Internet businesses...they carry Nissan parts at reasonable prices....although shipping on a transmission might kill you cuz of the weight.
