96 Pathfinder keyless entry, security system quirks

I have a 96 PF that I have owned since the summer of 2001. When I bought it used from the dealership, it didn't have either of the key fobs. So, I ordered two of them off eBay and programmed them just fine. Over the years, I have only used one of the remotes and the other sat around as a spare.

Just three days ago, I started having some strange things happen with my car. Sometimes the "lock" button does not work from the remote. I replaced the battery, but that has not fixed it. I came to learn that when I have problems with the "lock" button on one remote, I have the same problem with the other remote.

Observations:

  • The "unlock" and "panic" buttons on both remotes seem to always work--I can lock all doors from the interior power lock switch and successfully unlock all with the remote.

  • When I am having problems with the remote "lock" buttons, I have noticed that using the remote "unlock" button will not cause the interior dome lights to come on.

  • Sometimes the factory security system has spontaneously gone off. It happened three times yesterday while I was at work and one night while at home. (Two of those cases, the key fob wasn't even in my pocket or near anyone to accidentally press the panic button.)

I don't know if I need to do something to reset the security system or keyless system or perhaps there is a flakey relay somewhere or maybe something going on in the computer. Just looking for some ideas of things to look at or try (other than an exorcism for my PF).

Thanks! Randy.

By chance do you have a new cell phone that migth be inside or near the car when the alarm goes off?, Or a cell tower nearby when the remotes won't work maybe?, I have a 2006 Sentra and the remotes won't work when I am about 100~150 mts from a cell tower. Also i'am sure that the same kind of radio interference may afect the alarm.

Good luck

Thanks for the info--I appreciate it.

I know that there is a cell tower in the back of our building (where I work), but it has been there for 5+ years. The problem I am having with my Pathfinder exists at work and at home... and in the parking lots at stores too.
