I have 97' 200SX SE-R which would not want to start at all. When you turn your ignition key to start, I could hear 'CLICK' sound from the hood, but it just does not kick in. I read numerous posting from forums, and news groups. Many people started their car by connecting Negative of battery to starter or starter mounting bolt directly using ground wire. I would love to try it, but I just can not find the starter.
Could someone tell me where my starter is?? I was searching for service manual for my nissan, but it just does not show me where that is...
Dude, if you can't find your starter, maybe you ought not to mess with it? Batteries can source a lot of current. You could be burned or damage your car. If you are determined, follow the + battery cable.
How do you know the battery is fine? You might try putting it in the other car and see if it will start it, or just take it to the local battery store and ask them to load test it (usually a free test). Modern batteries have a way of instantaneously dying without any warning.
Do the lights dim when you try to start the car? If so, then there is at least some current flowing to the starter (and the battery is probably bad). If the lights don't dim when you try to start it and you just get the "click", then nobody is home down there in starter land. First check the breakers/fuses/fusible links, then look at the cabling from the battery to the starter.
First look at the ground wire from the battery to the car body. Clean the (-) connector at the battery end and follow the cable to the other end. If that end is corroded or loose, clean it up and tighten it as well. Then clean the (+) connector at the battery end and follow the fattest wire (usually red) coming out of that connector. It will go directly to the starter. Check that the connection at the starter is also clean and tight.
Btw - do all this cable clean> Battery is fine. Charged it for about an hour from my other car.
