Altima dash electrical issue

I have a 1994 Nissan Altima.

Twice in the last few months, the following has occurred:

  • Everything on the dash is dead (clock, fan, radio)
  • Wipers dead

Everything else (e.g. turn signals) OK.

Happened only first thing upon starting up (not in the middle of a drive). Problem was gone the next day or later in the day (after the car had been off for at least a few hours).

Looked at the diagram in the fusebox; since many fuses are involved, doesn't look like a loose fuse. Is there any possibility other than a short? If it's a short (that appears/goes away), can one fix it oneself, or must a mechanic do it? (I don't know how hard it is to remove the dash cover, etc.)

TIA,

S

I don't know what causes it, but I have a 94 Altima, and had the same thing happen once, about a year and a half ago. I was about 5 hours into a 14 hour trip, hit a bump on the highway, and all those things stopped working. About an hour later, I hit another bump, and they started working again! Hasn't happened again since, luckily. I'm guessing it was some ground that came loose somewhere, or maybe a loose connector in the dash. If you find out what causes your problem, I'd love to know what it is, in case it ever happens to mine again.

Good luck!

Check the main fuses under the hood. They supply power to the fusebox and since you have a whole block of fuses involved, sounds like a good place to look. Could just be the connection to one of them is corroded?
