chirping sound while idling in the mornings

my 2001 frontier xe is making a chirping sound while idling. i maily hear it in the morning, when i first start the truck... it seems to go away during the day, but sometimes it come back in the afternoon...

an observation i have made is that when i first start the truck, rpms start at 1200 and then drop down to 800... is this normal? if not, could it be related to the chirping sound?

thanks, ac

Water pump? Try isolating the sound by (carefully) using a stick such as a broomstick. Place one end on the suspect part and then put your ear alongside the other end of the stick. Sounds crazy but it works.

It IS crazy to put something against the side of your head with the other end near a SPINNING belt or pulley!!

A much safer diagnositic tool is a stream squirt bottle of Windex or very very mild soapy water .... aimed right where the belt goes over a pulley. Do one belt at a time. If it's a belt, the chirping will silence when wetted.

Probably a belt. Squirt theem with a bit of Windex or plain water and see if that changes the chirp.

It's a belt. I had the same symptoms in my car, it was replaced under warranty.

RPMs are not related - it's because the engine is still cold.

Damp ambient conditions in the AM cause belts to make all sorts of noises especially if they are not tensioned properly.

To dampness and low tension, add grains of SAND imbedded into the belt grooves.

It's the belts!

If it's not the belts, it could be an idler pulley or bearings on a water pump, power steering pump, aternator, ..... could even be the timing chain tensioner if it's the 'right' chirping noise.
