How best to disable car to prevent theft?

My 240sx was stolen yesterday in vancouver, canada. i did have a club on it. from wheel to gas pedal. when i go camping i always take the ignition wire. i guess i should take the entire distributor cap? or maybe just the fuse out of fuse box or one of the main relays?

You can always remove the fuel pump fuse to disable it.

It works for Mr. Bean. The padlocked hasp and staple on his car door is a further deterrent.

Nothing can stop someone with a tow truck or car hoist on to a platform truck. They have even been known to hoist cars over 6ft walls from secure private property. Gone in 60 seconds.

Only way to stop them is to park it on an island protected by blimps in the middle of an underfed piranha filled lake with a drawbridge in the causeway to it. OK maybe overkill, garage with cast concrete walls and roof, with a steel bar reinforced door bolted from the inside into steel frame may do.

Fit a tracker or other GPS locator so the car should be found and maybe perp and the fence with it.

locate and remove the ECCS relay, that relay powers up the ECM.

No power to the ECM , no running of the car.

When I bought my 93 Nissan Sentra back in 93, there was an anti-theft device mounted on the bottom of the steering column. It was a dealer theft deterrent, in other words, so that the vehicle could not be stolen from the dealership lot. All of their vehicles had the same anti-theft device installed. It was kinda like a 1-1/2" wide computer card slot with wires running from the botton to under the dash, that needed a

1-1/2" wide x 1-1/2" 'card' inserted in order to start the car. I kept the anti-theft device, but never used it (removed the 'card'). Now, they told me that if the 'card' was lost, I could not start the car until I took the Serial# of the vehicle to the dealer and had a new one made, since they were not interchangeable. When I got a new car in 97, I gave the Sentra to my daughter. Since I nerver used the 'card', I didn't tell her about it. One day she comes in and says she can't start the car. I go out and find the 'card' laying on the floor. I put it back in and off she went. I have bought 2 cars from the same dealer since 1993, and they did not have the anti-theft device. I wonder if they are still available? Otherwise, perhaps a simple SPST switch tapped into the main ignition switch wire, and hidden under the dash would work as well.

Nobody can prevent the theft of your vehicle if someone wants to tow it away. Really isn't rocket science to figure that out. However the Subject was how to BEST disable a vehicle. That meaning deterring the casual thief from smashing a window, popping out your ignition lock and driving away. And although I was being facetious when I said remove the steering wheel, that could deter some street thugs.

police phoned to say car was found with ignition smashed and radio gone about 35 kms away in another part of vancouver. have not looked at it.

That's dirt cheap. My GF's Honda Hurricane (motorcycle) was stolen, and it was over $200 just in the time it took a letter to get to her. And it turned out it was just the frame and block.

I have an alarm that kills the starter. I also put in a switch that defeats the fuel pump. This switch is well hidden. Of course, if someone really wants it, it's gone.

It is true. car theft / vandalism is so damned common that it barely elicits a response from the local cops.

The thief's tools looked like a couple of screwdrivers, a narrow putty knife, etc. in a shop rag. I can't remember because the adreneline made me blind for a sec. Cottonmouth. Weird. Pointing a hogleg at someone ain't as cool as it sounds. BUT--I like the idea considering his tools as weapons. Still, though, in the final analysis...I would hate to cap a guy over an old Dodge van, even if he IS a scum-f*ck. Guess I'm getting a little soft in my AARP years.

A local independent hardware store nearby [in the barrio] has battery-powered reciprocating chopsaws for sale--not great ones (Milwaukee, Makita, etc.) but cheesy versions. Under the glass counter. Looks like a great way to saw out an auto CD deck.

Time for my tranquilizer. Ahhhhhhhhh...

Any alarm, club, etc. will just keep the honest people honest...if they really want it, it it theirs: I had ign cut, electric fuel pump cut(had a LZ24/L20B hybrid transplant), alarm, & hydraulic brake lock on my late departed '71 510...the bastard still got it.
