Missing....

I just had a very complete tune-up done on my 4cyl 95' Nissan P/U (A/T,2WD) and the mechanic told me that I was missing my intake air temp sensor. I guess the previous owner decided it didn't need one. I'm thinking it probably (definitely) does or else the manufacturers wouldn't have put one in. So what exactly does that particular part do anyway? Does not having one affect my gas mileage? I've noticed it was pretty poor.
