Nissan Primera won't start - suggestions please ?

Hello,

I have a 1997 5-speed manual (shift) transmission Nissan Primers (UK). It won't start (even with the use of a mains powered boost starter).

Symptoms:-

Dashboard lights will come on but the engine won't turn. I considered a faulty stater motor BUT the electronics also seem to go crazy at this point. The speedo and tacho needles will jump slightly, pressing the hazard lights button seems to do odd things and occasionally a low-pitched continuous beep/whistle sounds. There can also be like the ticking of a clock from the dashboard area.

Grateful for any suggestions as to the true nature of the problem.

If the starter is jammed then it will pull the battery voltage down a lot, which may well corrupt digital stuff and anything that needs more than a certain voltage to function correctly.

Solved. Many thanks for all the help. I took the battery out, cleaned the terminals with an own-brand supermarket coke, dipped the connectors in a glass of the same and cleaned them. Put the battery back in, connected it all up, turned the ignition key and it started first time. Many thanks.

Sounds a lot like a dead battery. When I killed my battery once there was enough power for some dash lights and the clock and that's about it. I couldn't even disarm the alarm so when I unlocked the door (with the key!) there was a "ticking" sound as the alarm relay tried to do its thing. The car wouldn't even try to start because the alarm had the starter disabled.

My friend has a 1999 and has had this problem also. I take it you have an immobiliser? If you do, try putting your foot down fully on the accellorator whilst tryin gto start the engine. This is what the AA did to start my mates car, they said it was something to do with the immobiliser.

My local mechanic said it was the first time he had ever heard of Nissan Primera failing to start, he said it could be something with the immobiliser as to be honest the keys were hardly ever removed from the ignition, hard to believe but where I live crime is practically non existent. He recommended removing the keys and allowing the immobiliser go through its paces...eg..........open door ... close door light off........inserting key starting car..............for 2 weeks no problems then like as if the car knew I was in a hurry it let me down again and yes I now remove the keys every chance I get but that didn't solve the problem.

Can you say "recall"? Due to faulty engine sensors that cause your car not to start.

I have a Primera P11. 3 or 4 months ago I had problems that I couldn't start my it - the car had had battery problems since I got it. Lights come on on the dash, turn the ignition and everything goes dead. I brought a new battery and all was fine. Today it happened again - weird clicks and all -great fears of large garage bills! Thanks to this thread I tried a wee clean of the battery connectors - the ignition lights lasted a fraction of a second longer befor the went out. So I got the jump leeds out and connected the battery terminals to the cars leed via the jump leeds. It worked. So I'm going to get some coke later and try cleaning the terminals and connectors a bit better.

I thought you either burnt or sniffed that stuff depending on how old you are. Try a different fully charged battery with both posts and connector cleaned thoroughly with emery cloth.

Sounds like the alternator may be faulty and you are not getting enough charge or, and this happened with my P10 hatch back, the tailgate was not propperly closed so the boot light stayed on all the time. Trevor Smith Primera 1600 P10
