I have a 2004 sentra 1.8. The past 2 times I have tried to pump gas into my car.. The gas spits back up and pours right out of the hole while I am pumping gas. The tank is only a quarter full. Does anyone know why?
It may just be the gasoline 'foaming' too much as you pump it. I admit I'm not too sure about this phenomenon, but it happens to me sometimes - the auto shut-off clicks off when I first start filling the tank. (Maybe the warm temperatures have something to do with it.) Try filling the tank more slowly and see if that helps.

Could it be that the tank vent hose (pipe) is somehow kinked? This hose goes from the tank to the filler neck and allows the air from the tank to be taken to the filler neck precisely to prevent your problem from happening.
If i am not mistaken, there is also a fuel check valve that goes from the tank to the carbon canister. If the check valve is not working you could also experience the same problem.

unlikely. What is suspect is that a lot of fuel pumps are more sensitive to back pressure. And many cars have a very sharp angle from the filler neck into the tank. If you don't fully insert the pump nozzle into the filler neck, it'll backsplash and cause the pump to shut off.

Why on Earth would someone write to a FORUM with a problem like this? Call a DEALER and talk to the service dept. THEY should know and won't charge you to tell you what causes the problem!
