Smokey exhaust

I have a 1988 Nissan. It's been running fine until I refueled it yesterday afternoon at a full service station. By the time I got home the exhaust was smoking and and the exhaust smells awful.

What can this possibly be?

Diesel fuel mixed in it?

Could be a coincidence. If it's an automatic the vacuum modulator could have ruptured?

I have same question. Mine is 1994 and had similar problem after changing two fuel injectors.

Someone at work playing a practical joke on you. Probably put a smoke bomb up the tailpipe.

If it smells like rotten eggs it could be the catalytic converter.

If the smoke is white, they sold you a load of water. If the smoke is black, somebody probably got diesel in the wrong tank. Go back to that station and see if there is a line of people at the desk demanding repairs.

Well, the engine runs the same. I have not gone back to the station ... yet. The exhuast does stink like nothing I can really describe or smelt before.

A load of water?

No it doesn't. The last time I saw a car with a "load of water" we had to pull the tank after it was towed in... Didn't smoke at all. If the car had enough water in the tank to make it smoke, it wouldn't run to smoke.

Similar to a load of crap....

A load of water? Water doesn't burn. My engine still runs fine .... just this awful smelly exhaust is present when I get out of the car. Pew!

Have you got an exhaust leak?

I have had a similar problem with an associated exhaust leak. At that time, it was very small and tollerable and Ithought it was a bad muffler. Living with it that way, it has since escalated to a smoke screen generating demon that makes James Bond look like an amature. The car is a hazard and I cannot drive it this way. Additionally the engine now runs extremely poorly.

----- Posted April 17/04 -------- Here is the body of my post to this group: Subject: 94 Altima - Huge fuel consumption (2 - 3 MPG)

My car is a 94 Nissan Altima (2.4 litre). What might cause it to consume huge amounts of fuel? (it uses up 3/4 of a tank on a 20 mile round trip across town - no traffic - no idling etc.). Other symptoms - runs very rough with diminished power - produces huge dense clouds of smoke that smell a bit like gas. This is a somewhat intermittent behaviour. There is a tiny exhaust leak either at the head/manifold or manifold/exhaust pipe connection. (the sound is similar to a bad muffler, but originates under the hood near the motor)

I plan to change out the O-ring gasket (which is leaking)
