Trouble starting my 99 Sentra

After 2 days of sitting I went to my car and tried to start it. It fired immediatly but stayed alive for about 2 seconds then died. I started it again and it just wasn't kicking in. Finally I started it again, only this time flooring the gas pedal until she kicked in, then once it came alive, I kept goosing the gas pedal until I felt certian it could hold its own idle. After that the car was absolutely fine.

What part is going bad, the IACV? Can I clean it, or should it be replaced?

TIA

CD, sounds like the car was flooded. If it's working fine for now, leave it alone.

Other random thoughts: When was your fuel filter last replaced? almost sounds like you had some fuel delivery issues momentarily. I remember having to do exactly what you said to my old 88 Honda Civic on cold winter days to get it started/keep it running.

I would have thought so, but the 1st time I started it up from sitting

2 days it still acted up. I dont think it would have been flooded then. I always start the car by turning the key to run, wait for the feul pump to prime, then start. I never push the accelerator pedal.

CD,

If you have a leaky injector (or more than one), you could end up with hard starts because the cylinder(s) are flooded.

Sometimes my Maxima exhibits similar symptoms, typically if I just start the car, pull into the garage and then try to start the next morning. If you search the groups, there are posts from Daniel B. Martin (remember him?) describing this problem.

OK, maybe I I should have mentioned a little history on the car. It always starts like a champ on cold starts, and I drive it everyday. This was the 1st time in a while where I hadn't driven it in 2 days. That's when it had trouble starting. Not that I'm negationg your suggestion, but could that still be an injector problem?

The two days gives more time for the injectors to drip-drip-drip and flood the cylinder, I think that's what he's saying.

R Flowers - you capture what I was implying - thanks for clearing it up.

CD, it may have been a one-off thing, the only way to tell if it's going to happen again is to let the car sit for a few days again - which you may or not be able to manage logistically.

Ahhh, I see. That would explain alot. My car has always had not so perfect warm starts. They are never as sure-footed as my cold starts. I figured it was part of the nature of the car. I guess I'll have to live with this for a while since an injector job seems significant and I'm not ready for that right now.

Thanks Nirav and R FLowers.
