Fuel tank, Check engine light

I have a 98 Altima automatic about 60K Around June 03 , I had a check engine light come on,mechanic said he replaced the fuel pressure valve. and cleared the alert. I had no problems filling the tank at that time. exact info listed on work report is

found faulty vent control valve

replace valve ? reset readiness

Today I tried to fill the tank, and fuel came back out.

I had half a tank still , so I drove around a bit, no check engine light came on.

The car has been sitting idle for about 3 weeks in sun , so I though perhaps an issue with pressure/heat

After about 20 minuets, and after i tighten the cap some more, the check engine light came on.

Now the fuel cap is old, and looks like it could be replaced. If I replaced the fuel cap, cleared the check engine light could this solve my problem ?

Hey Russell, I'm not sure if a new cap will help you, but here's something you might want to check on. I found out today that my sentra has a fuel filter inside the gas tank. You might want to call the parts dept. at Nissan to see if yours is located in the gas tank. They told me that the fuel filters in the tank are supposed to last past 100,000 miles though, so this is just something you might want to check into. There might be some sensor that is bad too. I'm finding out Nissan is pretty bad with these dang sensors going bad. If you can drive it to a local AutoZone, they can hook it up to a code reader for free and hopefully point you into the right direction. Good luck.

Have a close look a the gas cap, maybe the seal is worn or broken. Try to give the gas cap a few extra turns when you put it back on. A loose gas cap can cause the check engine light to come on for the Nissan Quest. One of the test during the Smog inspection test is to remove the gas cap and run a pressure test.

Yup, it has something to do with pressure. Its all the newer cars I believe, my mom had this problem with her Civic. Turns out the cap wasn't sealiinga nd that was causing the SES light to come on.
