1984 Maxima stalling in stop and go traffic

My Maxima is fairly well self-maintained (automatice tx purchased in 1992 with 116k klics, only 163k klics now). Oil change interval is max 4k kilometers. The problem has only occurred in warm weather 20 C+. Cooling system is in good repair. Alternator has been rebuilt. Starts and runs fine, but once it is at operating temperature it is prone to stalling under idle conditions (warm idle is irregular varies 650 to 750 rpm). Thinking camshaft/timing chain and gears need replacement? Could a restriction in the exhaust system do the same?

No.

Doubtful, I'd start with cleaning the throttle housing.

Sounds simpler than what I was considering.

Try replacing the pressurized gas cap. Get the correct one - mine said "pre-vented." Made my 92 SE stop all that rough running immediately. See my post from today 9/6/2004 at 12:23 AM.

The first part of my search was the supply side of the fuel system:

  1. gas cap
  2. fuel filter replaced
  3. pressure and flow tested the fuel pump
  4. replaced the fuel pump relay, which led to replacing the alternator - intermittent, thermally sensitive voltage regulator, insufficient voltage at low RPM, excessive voltage (16 to 18 volts) at normal highway RPM. Only thing symptom was that occasionally the ignition lights would stay lit.

And now, as per Steve's suggestion I'm checking out the throttle chamber. No detectable play on the main valve stem bearings. No obvious cracks in vacuum lines, however inspecting the bottom of the air-flow meter to throttle plenum requires a skinnier forearm than mine to hold the QX3. Only thing that looked not normal was the wet smudge on the manifold at the base of the fuel pressure regulator. Could that be my problem??

Did you clean out the bore in the throttle plate area? The bearings don't give problems, the throttle bore gets carboned up causing problems.
