1992 niss max crank shaft problem

i had broken exhaust manifold stud on rear of engine. Mechanic tried to drill it but could not. He removed the head sent it to a mechine shop to have it filled and redrilled. Put it all back and it seemed fine. 200 miles later car broke down, had to be towed back.

He tells me the crank shaft broke off. He showed it to me. It broke off flush w/ the pully/wheel that the timming belt goes on. he said that it was nothing to do with what he did. how does this break off. Is it because he put timming belt on wrong?

We've heard of this happening when the belts are too tight. In addition, the crank could have a minor flaw in the metal's crystalline structure and may have experienced metal fatigue. Not good. Sounds like a very expensive fix. Chris

Hard to say. I've seen this a couple of times on those cars and not sure what causes it. Normally those engines are bullet proof. If he SUPER overtightened the belts or maybe even overtightened the crank bolt, that could do it. Given it sounds like he butchered the head trying to drill the bolt out, he may have done something wrong but you'd never be able to prove it. With that many miles and God knows how many other people have worked on the car in the past, could have just been a land mine and he stepped on it?
