1997 maxima check engine code

my '97 maxima has a check engine code p0500(vehicle speed sensor or circuit fault). the speedometer sometimes works, i replaced the vehicle speed sensor but no help. i replace the instrument cluster from ebay and solve the intermitent problem of the speedometer but still showing code p0500. do i have multiple problems such as speedometer and broken wires?. please help if someone have the same problem. thank you... ernest

The obvious question here is, How do you know for sure the unit you got from e-bay was not someone else's problem child other than their word " it worked when I removed it".

I have repaired many A32 series maxima's with a P0500 code by replacing the speedometer head with a "know good/new unit"
