1998 GXE - Time for 60K Service

Okay, I passed the big 60 today on the way to work. It is time for the

60,000 mile maintenance.

I looked in the manual and under my schedule plan (2) I should be:

Inspecting Drive Belts Replacing Air Cleaner Filter Inspecting EVAP vapor lines Inspecting Fuel Lines Replacing Engine Coolant Replacing Engine Oil/Filter (duh!) Replacing Spark Plugs (platinum) Inspecting Brake Lines and Cables Inspecting Brake Pads and discs Inspecting Automatic Transaxle Oil Inspecting Steering Gear Linkage, Axle, and Suspension Parts Inspecting Exhaust System Inspecting Front Drive Shaft Boots

I noticed in a few other posts that people recommend...

set ignition timing check auto trans fluid, replace if burnt check manual gear oil replace fuel filter

...any thing else I should be aware of? Any recommendations on places to go? I have no local mechanic that I've been using. My father-in-law has a mechanic he's been using for 15 years, but he's a GM specialist and is about 30 miles away.

Probably unnecessary - the computer regulates the timing. If it starts and runs correctly and the mileage is still the same, leave well enough alone.

Which do you have, an automatic or a manual? In either case, replace it.

Yes.

Most of this you can do yourself. Air cleaner, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil change, anti-freeze, etc. You don't even get your hands dirty changing the plugs on this car.

For the inspections, find somebody trustworthy who isn't going to charge you hundreds of dollars for doing nothing - the inspections involve literally looking to see if anything is worn down or falling off.

There is nothing magically different about this car. Your GM mechanic should be able to do the job. If you trust him, ask him for a quote.
